Is a bolt on chainring necessary on a fixed gear?

Is a bolt on chainring necessary for fixed gear bikes or could you go with a BMX style setup? Thanks for your responses.

Theres a couple fixed geared bikes with bmx cranks

Does it still work the same or is there specifics for having bmx cranks on your fixie?

I would think that it should be square tapered
