Okay.
Just browsing around, found that deep vs now come in this super reflective colour

I bought a pair a couple of weeks ago and have yet to build them up. They're pretty impressive looking.

The ELVS rims are extremely cool, and the treatment looks like it will be pretty freakin' durable. Maybe we can get Ethan@LH to chime in here...

I'd like some more information on the durability of the surface, it sounds like it's a bit sensitive. Like if it is damaged in an area will that part just not reflect anymore? Or, will it all start to peel off or something? Also, the picture shows a brake, but it advises not using one, what's the word on that?

It's not really an issue of machining or unmachining. The treatment is vinyl, and pretty damn tough and resilient from what I saw, but a brake will probably, tear it up pretty thoroughly.
by the way, this is a better picture of the ELVS rims - the way that they glow when subjected to lighting (like flash cameras or auto headlights). i believe this picture was taken in lance armstrong's shop, too (zomg!!! famus!)

yah, no rim brakes can be used on the ELVS rims at this point. As Queerpunk/Mattio mentioned, the 'coating' is vinyl and will not stand up up to a rim brake with out negative effects. That said, there are plenty of hub-based braking systems out there these days.

couldn't you just buy the reflective tape (which is sold at hardware stores, all kinds of colors, including black), cut it to the required width, and apply before building the wheel?
Seems like that would be easy, and cheap to boot...

I ordered one for my back wheel but still need to build it up.
The surface feels a little soft. If you stick your finger nail with enough pressure you'll leave a little mark.
The website says to take it easy on the coating as it may come off/scratched if you are not careful but we'll see as time passes.
I'll post some pictures as soon as i can find my camera charger.

I finally got around to building the rim up.
They took a silver rim and laid the ELVS film over it. I had to cut off a little excess film around the nipple holes after I built it up but aside from that it turned out good.

You were able to purchase the vinyl coating only? I ask because I think they are only currently sold on Black V's, and I want them put it on my white one's.

As far as I know the finish only comes in black. They apply it over a silver but I guess they could use any rim being that they will all look black in the day time. I don't believe they are selling the film separately or in different colors at this time.
My guess is that they are using silver rims because they probably cost them less than the colored ones and if there is a scratch in film the rim would still appear to be silver at night.

Plus you could apply the tape in small pieces to give you a nice effect.
Pasela(and others I'm sure) make tires with reflective sidewalls. Highly visible.
(see the pink mixte/fixte's wheels glowing)
