good fixed hub for street use?

Hey everyone, I was thinking about getting a new rear fixed wheel built up, and was just wondering what fixed hub would be good for daily riding/commuting (20 miles [give or take] or less a day). As for the rim I was planning on getting a Mavic Open Pro. I was thinking about getting a Miche track hub, but when searching on the forum I was reading on Miche hubs not being reliable.

Thanks for any/all input!

no, they're pretty great.

mihlbach 05-19-08 05:16 PM

Formula hub. Cheap and reliable. You can order them from a million places.

milhbach speaks the truth.

+1 on the Formula suggestion. Open Pros are great rims.

Hard to beat the iro hubs on sale right now.

Aren't IRO hubs rebadged formulas?

ak1 05-19-08 06:33 PM

I've been commuting on open pros to formulas for about 6 months and couldn't be happier.

na975 05-19-08 06:33 PM

why is miche hubs not reliable?

na975 05-19-08 06:44 PM

cone nuts always cracking on them formula hubs.

One of mine cracked in the middle of a long ride. I found a large washer at the side of the road and used it as a spacer and was able to continue on with the ride, no problem. Replacements locknuts are available.

yes

I've had no problem with miche's or formulas. Lots of hubs are just the same ones re-badged. If you want a cool color go with the new iro hubs, they're like 50 bucks and they're nice, or go with formulas. I'm thinking about building a phil/mavic wheelset though.

Thanks for all the input I think i'm going to place an order for the IRO hub.

trons 05-21-08 12:59 AM

oh damn $30 for a set? i might have to buy them just because they are cheap..

fixedup 05-21-08 08:35 AM

if you're talking about the ones in the bargain basement on the IRO site, I bought those too. the front hub ( at least the ones I got) was just a regular quick release, you'll need a skewer. but still a good deal for 30 bucks!

does anyone of you know any front high flange hub that have 24 hole (other than costumize phil)
or low flange hub that affordable and good for the road

Sure, as long as its not an ultra-weight weenie hub. Keep in mind that no hubs, except for BMX hubs, are really built for tricks. You could also use a MTB front hub. But, I wouldn't build a 24 spoke front wheel if I wanted to do tricks. I'd go with at least 36, or 32 if you are a small person.
