Anyone own these? They're rather expensive and I am looking for a cheaper alternative, perhaps something that isn't as long but more as shorts? I have rather big thighs but cut off Dickies look funky on me (basically want something w/ a small hem opening..)

My experience has been that you get what you pay for when it comes to cycling apparel. You can cheap out if you're only doing a few miles but that's just in the comfort department. What about style? Don't ever forget style, especially if you're riding fixed.

Wait, you said small hem opening. Well then, the world of roadie cycling spandex is your oyster. Bib shorts. Once you get bibs, you won't wear anything else.

I agree. Check out mountain bike shorts. You can find reviews at mtbr.com, but there are many more that aren't on there. I have a pair of Endura Zyme shorts that I really like, and I've read many favorable reviews for their shorts.

There are many companies that make knickers that aren't form-fitting. The companies I know of are Swobo, Endura, Hypnotic Designs, Chrome Bags, Swrve, Under The Weather, Portland Cyclewear, Pearl Izumi, Zoic, Chicago Wig, Sugoi, and Bicycle Fixation.

I commute to work in my jeans but for going home I change into my lycra so's I can take the long way home in comfort AND style. With my Discovery Channel jersey on, everyone mistakes me for Lance Armstrong even though I'm seven years older than him. Bystanders go "Wow! I never knew Lance rode a fixie. I've got to try that!"

I'm not too interested in knickers, I don't think I'm okay with wearing those around town when I'm off the bike..

just buy the shorts.

I really, really, really don't understand how they charge so much for stuff that's made in China. You can get a pair of US, Canadian or European-made knickers for literally half as much, or get climbing pants for a quarter of the price. Yeah, their stuff looks pretty nice, but come on.

I have em. Its neither here nor there. I like bibs better for hardcore long rides and rolled pants for coffee gettin'. They are too tight too be worn casually off the bike.

I love Ibex. Those knickers are just cotton though. Well, they're organic cotton. They aren't made here either, which is a shame because Ibex makes a lot of their apparel in the US. I'm just rambling. I would totally try a pair of those on. The orange bar tacks and color are great.

Zoic Private Reserve knickers FTW. Amazingly good quality and fit, especially for the price. They're synthetic but they feel like soft canvas. They also come with a top quality padded liner and both are machine washable. And if you don't like the tribal design on the side you can always black it out with laundry marker. I got mine from Performance, but I've seen them elsewhere for cheaper (just not in my size).
