Think about how much more difficult it would be to blow up a balloon if it were held under a brick. Much more compression is used in gas station pumps, regardless of the desired PSI. If you haven't figured it out yet, try pumping your car's tires with a bike pump. I'm guessing not many of you have actually used a gas station's air compressor?

Pumping up car tires with a bike pump SUCKS! I don't recommend it.

I have 27''wheels on my beater and they have schradervalves.I've pumped up at gasstations a few times to 100PSi with no problems.Most compressors have a cut off point at 130psi.

wow.
there is no difference in 50 psi in a car tire and 50 psi in a bicycle tire. the difference is VOLUME. it is VOLUME, not the weight of the car, that makes it suck to pump up a car tire with a bicycle pump. a gas station pumps out high volume at low pressure (HVLP), the opposite of what you need for a bicycle tire. |
...pv=nrt

actually pv=pv

Can a gas station compressor adequately fill bicycle tires? They're made to take car tires up to ~60 psi (or so, give or take, YMMV, whatever), while bike tires need to get above 100. Do those compressors put that much pressure into a bike tire? (I've never tried...)

BAHAHAHAHAHA THIS IS THE MOST ******** THING EVER
well no actually the one about how you could syphon a car tire into your bike tire and increase the pressure in the process, was the stupidest thread ever... this is a close second (anyone remember the argument someone made that the PSI came from what size the hole the air was being forced through? HAHAHA) |
