Should I Grease My Cog Teeth?

I searched, and I couldn't find anything about this. I greased by threads, but should I grease the teeth as well? It seems like there's a lot of noise coming from back there, and I'm wondering if that would solve the problem. If so, what kind would you suggest? Thanks a lot.

No, lube the chain with tri-flow or equivalent.

Only the incisors; leave the molars alone.

Its not necessary. Some cog and chain and chainline and tension combinations to tend to make some noise back there. What you can do:

-ignore it.
-wait for the cog/chain to wear in together and get along better.
-maybe look at your chainline again.
-maybe consider whether the chain is too tight. yes, it can be too tight.
and, my favorite:
-lube the hell out of the chain for a while. It will quiet most noises, and eventually all will settle in together.

Greasing the cogs? The only downside is that sticky grease will just tend to muck up your chain. But maybe it will quiet things. I would just over-oil the chain, however.

Thats the fg curse. It should be quieter than a derailleur multi-gear setup, but its not (all the time). Some of my cheaper ss and fg bikes are silent as the grave. But my best FG bike with perfect chainline and very high quality 1/8" drivetrain is and always has been loud as hell. (No, my chain is not too tight.) Assuming good chainline, proper chain tension, and quality unworn components, there's not much you can do about it. Using some thick-ass lube helps temporarily, but that also gunks up your DT pretty bad.

Thanks, everybody. I think it's a combination of my gearing and the chain tension - I'll loosen up the chain a bit and douse it in Rock'n'Roll.

dousing your chain in grease is bad. it'll collect dirt and lead to faster chain wear.

use a drop of light grease/oil at each roller. after you're done with the whole chain, wipe it off with a rag.

If it's a new cog, it'll just have to run in a bit.

Let it rust, the chain is going to collect crap from the front tire anyway, unless you get fenders.
