blueing a bike frame?
i always thought it would be cool to have a frame stripped down to the metal and blued like a gun... anybody know if this has been done before, and if so, the effectiveness? what method was used? etc. i haven't looked this up at all, so feel free to tear me a new one if this is a stupid question or a repeat post, or something that can easily be found on google.

well, it would be pretty sweet.
But it is not the most robust method to preserve your frame. |
|
Blueing a frame would be awesome looking but not very easy to do....first would be finding dip tanks large enough to accept a frame...most tanks are only about 6" by 24" and would only work on steel frames.
And second would not wear very well. I am not an expert on blueing, but I am a gunsmith...I shape the gunstocks and my bench is right next to the blueing room so if you have anymore questions I could try to ask for you. Chris |
I think a poster here by the name of isotopesope (or something like that) blued his frame
and if I am not mistaken I have also seen a desalvo that was blued |
you mean like this?

Wow, that looks like medieval armor. ****ing cool.
|
i want a frame made from medieval armour!
we should discuss a group buy |
if thats blueing, i don't want it.

For all of us idiots, what exactly is blueing?
|
|
you could always try some of this...

that's pretty bad ass. It reminds me of a katana. My katanas are all shiny and sharp and way deadly and stuff, but still.

If you look at almost any firearm where the metal looks kind of matte black that is blueing. Basically it is controlled rusting.....Chris |

for some reason, whenever I think of bluing, I think of tempering and the colors that come from that. |
This process is more similar to anodizing than tempering
|
|
|
i thought that in the old thread about blueing, it was ultimately explained that the process didn't hold up so well on a bike frame and that, while interesting, it's a pain in the ass and is neither practical, nor protective, nor durable.

I have a few firearms with a blued finish and while they're certainly pretty, you can see your fingerprints all over them. It gets super annoying.
Perhaps blued and clear powdercoated? |
