Frame paint/powdercoat question
 

I have a Nishiki Professional that i hve built into a fixie, i now look at it and want to completely overhaul it and make it into something much better. I want to get a new headset, stem, bars, keep the crank, probably replace the BB, and have the frame either powdercoated or paint it myself. What have you all paid to have your frame powdercoated? I am debating whether or not to have it powdercoated, or if i should just rattle can it? I'd love your opninions, thanks.

No harsh bro but personally I think you should sell it and grab a real track frame with decent paint. Unless you have some special bond to the frame.

well my grandpa gave me the frame, and it is really nice, lugged and all.

That seems a decent reason then... I think you should get it powdercoated with the lugs done differently.. maybe even chromed. That would cost a pretty penny but it would be worth it. $120 for a barebones powder and probably well up and up from there for lugwork and fancy colors.

alright, thanks for the help. I am in the process of selling my Bianchi Fremont, and in 4 days when that sells, i'll be able to figure out what i want to do. i definately want the frame to be green though.

anyone know what type of bottom bracket that bike uses? I can't seem to figure it out, all i can see is that hte BB that is in there righ tnow was made in Japan, anyone know what type these bikes used?

If you're keeping the cranks, just measure the spindle. Actually, if those are sugino cranks, you might want to have a shop measure them to make sure they're JIS taper and not ISO (since that's when they were cloning Campy components).

I would be a little nervous about sandblasting and powdercoating a 25+ year old frame - might be a little more stress than it can take. Powdercoating usually runs $75- $150 depending on the shop.

If the powdercoater is any good(as in used to doing bikes) i dont't think the blasting should be a problem,regardless of age.Problems usually arise if someone tries to save couple $ and takes his frame to a hack that is used to sandblasting rusty truckframes and keeps blasting until half the tube is gone.

The headset is probably JIS......

dont ruin your bike. restore it...dont powdercoat/riser/oury your bike. if you want that type of bike, buy an IRO or pake.

I paid $200 to powdercoat my bike. It was a little more because i picked out some special color. I was going to do the lugs a different color, but that would have had to be done at an autobody shop after the bike was powdered. Then i thought about chroming the bike so i could just powder the tubes. In the end i decided to powder it all one color and keep it one color.

Expect to pay $150-$200.

I like old Nishiki frames.

My wife has a beautiful Nishiki with hard chrome under the paint.

I recently had my frameset powder coated by a very reputable company that does a lot of bike frames and they charged me $200 for one color.

They did a nice job.

For riding a road bike as a fixed gear on the street, I would consider 165mm cranks in order to avoid pedal strike.

Where could i find a replacement bottom bracket to fit it? Thanks

when i got my frame powder coated they charged by size so frame and fork was $80 but i talked and was nice and only paid $70 or 75. id just call around get prices and make a decision from there.

id say powder coat over rattle can. from what i hear rattle can sounds hit or miss and at times dulls and fades fast.

i paid $100 for mine on my old frame with a metal flake clear coat,

the new frame i have is wet painted, and that ran about $250 but also did a color match to my old frame,
so oh well.

I would go with powder, just make sure they do a solid clear coat over.
