New Steamroller -- advice?
 

My new Steamroller complete bike is coming in the mail from Jenson today. I'm so amped.
Because I am a super-weenie (and/or busy) I had them do a free "Bike Build" that requires "Minor Assembly." I'm confident I can do this -- however, I hear about chainline issues with the bike? Is this true of the 2008 model in anyone's experience? I'm sure I'll replace most of the components piece by piece like I did on my main ride, but any advice/impressions on the stock setup?

i got a complete steamroller a couple months ago and i haven't had any issues with the chainline at all it seems to be right on...i love the bike, i changed out the stem the 1st day i got it and i got a new brooks for it too but other than that it is stock...oh and i have some mks pedals coming to me

what kind of post did you replace the stock one with? i wanted to match the seatpost and stem, right now i have a salsa stem but i am thinking about getting a thomson set...

the cheapest adjustable-angle post i could fine. parts-bin no-name crap. the steamroller stock post is unadjustable and therefore useless. next purchase is a thomson.

true, i haven't really had an issue with it so far...seems the brooks is at just the right angle

i am thinking about trying some riser bars for commuting and keeping the drops for long rides, what are you riding on yours?

Get fatty tires. Steamrollers can fit 38's. Hehe.

Naturally, you'll want to go through the bike with a fine-toothed comb just to make sure everything's done OK.

Check to see if the headset is tight enough, or not overly tight. Check all the bolts are properly tensioned and greased before learning two years from now they weren't greased and now they're seized. Check to make sure the cranks were mounted properly on the bottom bracket spindle and aren't spinning off-kilter.
Go through all the spokes and check to make sure the nipples are properly tightened.
Check to make sure that the cog and lockring are properly secured on the hub.

There's nothing model-specific I can think of with regards to the Surly Steamroller. Just common sense.

I haven't changed anything on mine yet. Maybe the stem/seat in the future, but everything else I'm happy with.
