Helmet Recomendations

i was hoping someone could recommend me a decent looking helmet, im going to use it for commuting, general jackassery, and a big touring ride i'm going to be doing this summer

so comfort, a visor, and looks are all important to me

so is price

anyone?

Visor, comfort, and looks all good IMO... only bad thing is ventilation...

Comfort is directly related to ventilation especially on longer rides, such as a tour. I would never get the helmet above (bern) for a tour, you would be dying, and then never wear the damn thing. Just go to your LBS and try some on. We cannot tell you which will feel best, and looks are subjective.
Trek makes a nice all black helmet for about $50 with good ventilation.

im going to try and shoot for a white or silver helmet, if not ill just paint it, i want it to reflect heat a little

that giro looks really nice, but no visor :(

everything you described..all thought looks are subjective

I have the Baker and I love it. Make sure you get it with the EPS foam cause they make one that has no foam and isn't certified.

I have a Bern Baker and I don't sweat anymore than I do with my well ventilated Giro road helmet. I also don't feel hotter with the Bern. Seems to be fine for me.

Definitely get it in white. It makes you go faster. This is the one I have and I love it cause it looks like a Polo helmet.

I am a big fan of the Bell Metro. Or the somewhat cheaper Citi. They sell for cheap sometimes through Nashbar or Performance.

It is a nerdy looking helmet though.

don't forget your kneepads and wristguards with those bern helmets.

srsly, are you on a skateboard or what?

I like my bell influx. Its pretty enough that I don't feel like a dork wearing it, its comfortable, and its well ventilated. The little dial at the back of some helmets (like this one) that allows for fit adjustment is a must in my opinion.

Bell X-Ray. i got mine at performance for like $35 on clearance.

i used to hate helmets before i wore the X-ray. the dial-fitting system is great, and the helmet doesn't weigh a thing.

Those Bern Baker helmets are possibly the ugliest helmets I have ever seen.

Different strokes, I suppose.

i happen to agree

i have a bell metro, and i hate it, its heavy, hot, and gives me a headache from poor fit

zoltani 06-05-08 05:23 PM

The bern baker is 17 oz too.... The giro above is 9.2 oz, the extra 7.8 oz may not seem like a lot, but when it is on your head for 5+ hours a day you will feel it!

Giro and Bell helmets are gooood stuff

also check out Spiuk helmets. They're cheap-er and look pretty sweet

I've got the Bern helmet too and I like that it is a little different from my road helmet.

mugatu 06-05-08 08:14 PM

a helmet is something you shouldn't be shy about spending some cash monies on

I had a few cheap helmets that I bought and never wore. When I finally bit the bullet and bought one I actually liked (specialized decibel) I started wearing it 100% of the time, because it looks good / is comfortable / has great ventilation.

relyt 06-05-08 08:43 PM

Those Bern helmets have no vents? What a bad idea in the summertime.

I like my Giro Monza. I never would have paid MSRP for it, I got it on sale from Nashbar for $40. No visor, though.

idiq 06-05-08 08:46 PM

The Specialized Chamnoix is a nice helmet for the price. I ride a Bell Ghisallo (sp) and love it.

TR909 06-05-08 08:58 PM

Definitely. I think road helmets are the ugliest things you can place on your head.

Seems to be just fine so far. No hotter than my vented road helmet.
