wow, i am definitely going to watch the corners now, i had my toe clip slightly scrape the ground a couple times which scared me straight...i thought i need to rethink how i am turning and do i really need to be that low on a turn
|
Riding around in slow motion circles last night, I hit a loose chunk of the curb and actually moved it with my pedal a good four feet. Strangest sensation.
|
what are these 'tarck' bikes people keep speaking of? i've never ever struck pedal on my track bike with 170mm arms/keo pedals, though once when i was less experienced and had cages, i did try to evade a speedbump, skidding my pedal on a curb and supermanning over the bars. i wound up skidding across the pavement straight on my chest (with no road rash, thanks louis garneau!)

I pedal struck on an old crap road bike while going into a turn hot & still pedaling. It lifted my back end up a bit and scared the shiz out of me but I made it out ok.
Harris Cyclery is selling some old 160mm cranks, for hard turning fun. |
Yeah, Im ok. Thanks for the concern. I just keep telling myself that it could have been a lot worse. My girlfriend was driving behind me on a pretty busy road here and saw the whole thing. Fortunately she was able to avoid running me over!
The worst part is not being able to ride for a couple weeks. Im starting to have some serious withdrawls. On the bright side, Its a good excuse to go shopping for some new parts... |
I've pedal striked a few times when I was clips and straps, never clipless though.
|
I've caught the top of a curb while turning. Lovely experience, plenty of traffic.

Not once have i struck on my track bike with track or clipless pedals. |

i struck real bad one time and ate it so hard. my stomach jumps any time i take a corner a little to hard and tap the outside edge of my pedal, but I've basically learned my limit

Conversion bike, 175 cranks, tiagra (with external bottom bracket= slightly bigger Q factor i think).
pedal strike only twice, once going down a "dropped" curb (its dropped 5" from the curb, so its really sharp) i was turning and it caught, skipped a couple feet, and kept going like i meant to do it. second time, was moving through gridlock, i got too close to the curb and it smacked down and tossed me up a little bit (it was weird, i had hopped up a bit just so that i could get my bag over a wing mirror, and it struck tossing me up a bit...) but i kept going no problem... i think I can (as of yet) stay on when stuff like that happens only because of all of my less then skillful mountain bike riding. So I'm use to hitting a pedal from trying to get that extra stroke in before the corner.... my lack of skill on the trails, has increased my skill off the trails... hahaha |
I hit a pedal really hard the very first time I rode fixed, it was a conversion and I was going pretty quick, I even though going into the turn that I better not turn to hard since 'I had to keep pedaling', but I hit it anyway, and it must have lifted/bounced my back wheel a good 6 inches off the ground, but I didn't fall, I just lost my line and went flying up on the the sidewalk with my feet out of my pedals. I never clipped a pedal again on that bike.
But for the first time, just today, I clipped the my gr9 pedal on 165mm cranks on my tt, I figure I was due, since I'd sorta been pushing it for ages to see how far I could go. Its too bad, since I was almost convinced that I couldn't actually hit it. |
I've struck pedals a few times with 165 cranks but I've been thinking recently about give 170 a try.
Anyone gone 165 --> 150mm and I liked it? I wouldn't mind a lil more torque. |
i use 170 on the track and never have problems. then again washington park velodrome in kenosha is a pretty low bank, probably 30 degrees or so. pretty permissive. crank length up to a certain extent depends really on your size. i am 6'4" and don't really feel like spinning the heck out of anything shorter than 165. your mileage may vary.

track bikes have high a BB.
no need to say more. <3 |
I struck a curb once, got one foot out of the clips before I crashed. I went off the bike kinda diagonally, past but not over the bars. Busted my face and shoulder up real bad. I was missing half an eyebrow for about 2 and a half months.
