Stem Adapters?
 

So I am building up a Steel Fixie and the fork is 1" threaded. That said a quil stem will not work for me for a couple of reasons (Not long enough and they don't come in Black(at least to my knowledge)). I am now intereseted in using a standard stem adapter (sold through Performance) to convert the 1" Threaded to 1-1/8th Threadless so I can use a standard stem (130mm. w -10dg. rise). Not to mention being able to then use a Chris King Headset. If anyone has any info whatsoever on the subject including reviews and pics I would really appreciate it.

They're just generic devices and they all should work the same. They're silver. They adapt stuff. That's about all they do and they're not too exciting.

These adapters work well as intended.

There are plenty of quill stems available in 130mm and in black. The cinelli 1A is available in black on eBay in many sizes (they are for 26.4mm bars, however), but would work with 26.0 bars with a very thin shim. (single layer of aluminum can). Also, Chris King headsets are available in threaded models. Just look around.

That said, the adapters work fine.

If your fork is threaded you'll still need a threaded headset.The adapter is just a quillbottom with straight top that the threadless stem clamps on to.And as others said...they work fine.

try the easton EA50 stem. mine was 5 dollars from sierra trading post

I love the Black Cinelli Quill. However, are Cinelli Bars my only option? I have to say I am a bit skeptical of the whole "shim" thing.

i just did some research for you. looks like you can get a shim for 26.4 to 26 and use nitto bars

Well, you'll need 26.4 handlebars if you don't wish to use a shim. However, if you are comfortable using a very thin shim, then you can use 26.0 handlebars (most standard road drops and bullhorns). I've run many shimmed setups without difficulty or slippage. A piece of cut aluminum can works quite well. I honestly wouldn't worry much about slippage issues. If extremely concerned, you could buy some .2mm shim stock (available at mcmaster.com and other places) and wrap it around the bar once to give you the .4mm that you need.

I appreciate the info man; you seem to know your stuff. If I choose the Shim Route and I go with Bull Horn Bars would I need to get a shorter Quill Stem? I have never used the Bull Bars before but it seems to me that I would be more stretched out on them. I really like the Soma Fab EL Toro's. What are your thoughts?

dont go buy a 130mm stem and then bullhorns unless you are some kind of gorilla. get a nice 120mm or shorter black quill stem. I used to have a black ITM threaded stem. deda makes one, too. Its called Deda Murex and it needs no shim. those adapters are extra weight that you dont need.

I am 6'5" 210lbs. though... Kind of a Gorilla. I just figured that I would be way more stretched out on Bull Bars than regular Drops. I also found another Italian Quill company (Modolo) that makes some pretty sexy Black Quills in my length. I really appreciate the info. That Deda looks pretty nice!
