Project Cheap Fixie begins!
After much faffing and fluttering trying to decide what my next bike should be, I realised I have no money so I'm putting together a fixie for as little outlay as possible.
So far: Old steel compact hybrid frame, from my Mum: free Homemade cowhorn handlebars, using bits of old barends and exercise bike bars: free Still to come: Everything else :) I have a lead on some cheap Xenon parts, but being 1.30am on Christmas day it'll have to wait a bit longer. Anyone want to donate a decent fixed/free flip-flop hub, a 1 inch 700c fork or some singlespeed cranks? |
Check out E-bay. Earlier today there was a set of 170mm 52/39 specialized road cranks going for $15 plus $10 shipping. If you're interested look in road bikes parts and accessories. Decent cranks for $25.

Hooray for Ebay! I know have some bar end brake levers and a Look 1 inch fork on the way. Got some good eads on wheels and cranks too :)

Missed out on a real nice set of wheels by a whole penny (I bid £60, someone else bid £60.01, from now on all my bids will be 2p higher :) ). But I do now have a sexy front wheel for just £25. Now all I need is a matching tubular rim and a fixed hub (and some spokes). Can't decide whether to leave my road wheels alone and put the new ones on the fixie (save relacing a whole extra wheel) or put tubs on my road bike and use clinchers on the fixie (my commuter bike eventually). Mmmm, Surly :) Found a fixed/free 32h in black at my LBS, got a case of 'it's in my hands, I'm gonna buy it', now all I need is another rim, some cranks, and a few little odds and sods (Ebay's calling).
