What about this bike makes it worth $285?

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

To me it just looks like an old Shimano with a suicide hub. Is it just because people don't want to try to figure out what parts they need and re-dish the wheel themselves?

The fact that people will pay that much. Something is worth only what people will pay for it.

Apparently attaching a bottom bracket lockring to a non-track hub gives people peace of mind that the cog won't come off, but it's still a suicide hub.

winning bidder with zero feedback. i guarantee he ain't gonna "pay". i can't count how many times i've seen bikes re-listed on ebay due to non-paying bidders.

the quality of the description parallels the quality of the bike.

Because the title said "Fixed Gear Track Messenger Fixie Road Bicycle". With a tag like that, it has to be good.

If you want to really strike it rich on eBay, take better pictures. Clean the bike till it is so shiny it blinds you. Accurate descriptions. Know what you're selling. If there's a tubing sticker, make dang sure you take a picture of it, that alone will jack up the price quite a bit. I scored a Dave Tesch(built Masi frames in early 80's) frame off eBay for peanuts because the seller didn't bother to mention that fact nor did he realize what the DT in the serial number meant.

If at all possible to work in the words "Fixed Gear Track Messenger Fixie NJS Campy Keirin Chrome Rapha Hasselhoff", do it.

Totally true, that title had so many 'common' tags.. that's probably why the view count was so high.
