How wide are your flat bars?
How wide are most people using their flat bars?
sugg. as wide as your shoulders generally. some run smaller so they can fit through traffic some like to breathe and have it wide.
yeah, it's 90% preference. some people moan and groan about bars not being wide enough, but i don't feel like i'm giving up any leverage this way (i've tried different lengths) and i certainly don't feel like i have any less control.
21". good leverage. open lungs. no problems in traffic, you just have to pick better lines and learn to wheelie over mirrors.
16.5 inches, basically as narrow as possible but still comfortable. Just ride around and see where your hands want to grip most of the time, then cut.
Too lazy to measure, but they're as wide as I am.

About 4cm wider than my shoulders. Not sure how wide that is. If I were still in SF, I might cut them down to shoulder width, but while in in Santa Cruz, the extra leverage is nice.

I'm waiting for someone to post a pic showing a doorknob stuck in the steerer. Some of these flat bars are so narrow the riders must be pencil thin and get their kicks riding between cars in parking lots.
Mine are ~50cm. Reckon I could shave a couple of cm's off that, but no more. You lose too much leverage and ability to sprint from slow speed or get a fast start from a stop when you go too much thinner than your shoulder width (that's me anyway). That's much more important to me than squeeking through traffic with crazily narrow bars. I think a lot of people go super-thin due to fashion rather than function.

Mine are grip + 1in.
