Fixed Gear Accessories?
 

I know fixies are all about simplicity and minimalist style riding. I have had them in the past when no one know what they where but now they are all the rage in So. Cal. / OC.

But I just got a Steamroller and dig riding it all over and now commute on it.

Here is my questions. Is it cool or acceptable to put a computer on your fixie to know how fast you are going and more importantly how many miles your putting on?

Also as a bike junkie I and have had countless mtn bikes and road bikes. So I have a really good helment and on my commute I wear a helmet out of habit / security of having one on from my other biking. On a mtn bike I have crack hemets in some good wipe outs on some sketchy terrain. I was glad I opted for the protection.

Is it cool to wear a helmet and are there any cool looking helments other then my high tech vented Bell helmet ?

forget the computer and your 'cool' helmet, get a beer hat and a portable dvd player. mount it up and play mashSF for hours on end, you can measure your milage by dvd chapters.

also, important accessories are:

-old timey tattoos
-girlfriends with short haircuts
-plaid shirts made for little boys
-empty beer cans or beer logos on everything

Are you riding your bike or posing with it? If you're riding it, put whatever you want on it and wear whatever you want. If you're posing with it, just walk it everywhere. You won't need a helmet or computer to walk.

Go do whatever the hell you want, regardless of whether its "cool" or not. This isn't the Emmies, its just riding a bike.

A computer is essential.

Hey, it's the end of the workday and I'm going to put on some spandex bibs and jersey, a high tech vented helmet, and clicky-clacky shoes to go ride my fixed gear bike. Please don't report me to Hipster Control!

To the OP: Its your bike, do what you want with it cause you're the one spending the money on it not us so add whatever you think you need whether its a computer or a set of fenders. You will find that "Cool" and "Safe" don't go together in the fixed gear crowd so if you're running a brake and wearing a helmet you will be praised by those who do the same and ridiculed by those who don't.

I like my high tech Bell helmet, and most people thinks is cool. But then again, bunny ears are cool too, depend on which way you swing... sorry dude, please don't take it in a bad way...

Like what Thetank said, it's your bike you are riding. And as a bike commuter myself, i think safety comes first before "looking" cool.

Computer, front brake, helmet, headlight, tail-light, seat bag, bottle cage.

I enjoy it, and am usually prepared. ;)

The question is: Why should a track cog and lockring determine what accesories, or safety equipment that you use?

As for computer... I just used gmaps-pedometer to figure out the distance of my commute and grocery/beer runs and used multiplication to figure out miles/week/year/whateva.

Sometimes I got really fancy and looked at my watch before and after the ride and used some fancy division to figure out avg. speed.

i think wiring runs for computers are just ugly, but never minded a wireless model. personally i don't have a need for one.

don't forget to get some overly tight jeans cut off to look like floodpants, an italian/french cycling cap, a huge messenger bag to keep your cell phone in, and two friends who ride fixe gear and you guys can post up outside record shops bragging about how street you are

forget what is cool, eh? and ride for fun... a cycling computer is pretty useful if you are trying to stick to a regimen of training (if biking is part of an overall exercise thing for you)
