Strongest Chain?

KMC Stainless?
Pyramid?
SRAM?

I need something wicked strong. Is there anything I am not thinking of?

Many Thanks in Advance,

do you break chains often?

queerpunk 06-25-08 10:02 PM

you're not thinking of the fact that big huge ****ing badass sprinters who can jump hell of hard and sprint well over 40mph are using - and not breaking - conventional, standard, run-of-the-mill 1/8" and 3/32" chains.

all chains, if installed properly, are gonna be strong enough.

Panfry,

Are you from Boston?

PanFry 06-25-08 10:04 PM

Well...

Truthfully I don't have my FG finished yet but I have stretched and broken a few on my SS 29er (36t/18t.). I assure you my chain line is straight. Just curious if there is something close to indestructible out there I could throw on. I would even consider putting a KMC KOOL on it if the chain wasn't so wide.

I've been wishing for a lighter quieter chain lately. I'm thinking on going back to 3/32nd width. Its more forgiving of an imperfect chainline. I have a super bling Izumi Mark V and Its no better than a $20 KMC.

PanFry 06-25-08 10:07 PM

Nope I am from ATL.

dutret 06-25-08 10:52 PM

have someone show you how to put it together properlyor pay someone to do it for you AND change it when it gets stretched(which has little to do with your awesome strength).

3 dollah kmc z. 1/8. Its the stongest you will find.

Chuck Norris once broke the land speed world record, on a bike with out a front tire or chain.

That means chains aren't needed

According to Sheldon Brown, mountain bike chains go through far more stress than anything track riders can dish out.

SRAM 3/32" 9-speed chain; available everywhere, even at places that never heard of fixed gear bikes.

Fixed

I've only ever broken chains on my mountain bike or if they were improperly installed (stiff link) in the first place

I though it did have a front wheel, but the wheel was a square which was the only reason he didn't break the speed of light

If you're being serious, and don't want a 1/8" or 3/32"...

3/16" KMC. Get a custom-machined track cog. You'll probably have to do the same for the chainring depending on what ratio you're riding.

queerpunk 06-26-08 07:15 AM

a 3/16" chain isn't stronger. it's just fatter.

you also won't have to get a wider chainring or cog, since the larger chain will sit on 1/8" bits just fine.

that strikes me as a really silly option.

diff_lock2 06-26-08 07:17 AM

Motor bike chain.

3/16" moped drive chain has thicker sideplates as well as being wider. but that is a really silly option. any 1/8" bushing chain (installed and maintained properly of course) will likely treat you fine. i like izumi, as a light rider; some of my burlier friends like the kmc 710 and the DID track.

Pardon my ignorance, but does that not hold true for 1/8" over 3/32" as well? And I do think a wider, thicker, chain, made of the same material as a 1/8" or 3/32" chain will be stronger. Sorry for being so silly and clearly wrong.

Yes, a 3/16" will sit on a 1/8" fine, just as a 1/8" will sit on a 3/32", but it will have side-to-side play. Hence, the caveat, 'if you're serious' - then I would go all out for something custom machined, if you buy parts, they should fit. I don't buy a 1" threadless fork and put it in my 1 1/8" headset because it will 'fit just fine'.

I do think it would be silly to get something custom machined, I highly doubt the wattage put out by the OP will ever need it. But if you're serious, then that is a option.

just rock the KMC 510

I run an Izumi SuperToughness and have had no issues. Im sure you can do as good for cheaper though.
KMC chains are clearly built much cheaper and I dont personally want to trust one. Also, they have a serious amount of side to side that I dont like thinking about.

Why skimp on the chain anyway?
