Quality Crankset/BB Combo?
I have searched Sugino, Miche, Campy, Bullet Proof and Dura Ace. I am looking for a durable solid performing Crankset and Bottom Bracket combo that won't totally break my bank. I was somewhat interested in the Sugino RD with a Messenger Chainring but it seems that most feel it is a gimicky waste. Don't get me wrong I am not one to question my own decision making ability I simply need more info from those who have more experience on the subject. I just need a quality combo for under $300.
Any thoughts on the subject? Many Thanks in advance, PF |

They are all good choices. It almost depends on a) whether you're actually racing track b) which one you like most, aesthetics wise |
Unfortunately I doubt this bike will ever see an actual Track... Sadness. However, I am building it up for Road Racing. I am 6'5" 215lbs. and very strong so I need something that is pretty tough and performs to my expectations (hard/fast).

Is this going to be a TT bike? |
yes.
Yeah, I am going to attempt handing some people their asses with a SS Road Bike.
Should be interesting... |
If you are going convert a road frame, you could just use road cranks.
If you are going to make a dedicated SS bike, these are bomber and come in 180mm. http://www.ebikestop.com/truvativ_om...set-CR2469.php |
People are probably getting sick of me suggesting this, but Truvativ Omnium. Should be able to get the crank/bb for ~$200USD. As a road racer you will appreciate having an external bottom bracket.

Legs do you work for SRAM? Hahaha.

alien crank and alien BB is awesome. i have it and love it. i also have sugino 75 crank and BB. Love that too, but it costs a fortune. stick with the alien combo.

I managed to piece together a Sugino 75/Phil 110.5 ISO/50t Mighty Competition combo via Ebay and Lickbike for about $300. Look around a bit more. BTW i'm 6'4' and 210 and ride kinda rough and I couldn't ask for a better setup.

suginos are pretty nice if you get the right ones, but ill also throw in my vote for the octalink + dura ace

I haven't really been paying attention over the past few years. Have the Octalinks finally stopped stripping?

The Alien appears to be the Soma Hellyer but for about 55% less money.

If not sugino rd or truvativ omnium. Once again you're not strong enough for anything but the worst crank to be a problem. When it comes down to it you're not going to beat geared riders by putting a lot of force on the cranks(or chain) but by being comfortable putting enough force at 160+rpms to match their gears. |
Here's my NOS Campy Road Record + Phil BB on a Lemond Fillmore.
It can be had for your stated price point. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...7/bcf2f670.jpg |

+1 for Sugino RD and matching BB. Good luck on racing roadies. I raced one this morning. He was 100meters ahead of me, heading for a hill. Wearing a sleeveless shirt which marked him as a triathlete; the worst kind of cycling poseur. With that much head start, I had my work cut out for me. I put my head down, dialed in 400 watts, and charged up that hill. Not knowing I was back there, he eased up as he neared the crest. His mistake. I zoomed past without slowing. Most likely, he won't return to my neighborhood after such a spanking. |

Alien's cranks are Andels (IRO's too i think). Andels are available in flat black @ Ben's cycles for under $100. Solid cranks. |
Otut of curiosity exactly which rides are you planning on smoking the 2/3s on?
