noob question about cogs

What makes a cog a good cog? more teeth? less teeth? bigger? smaller? etc.

if there is another post that can help me out with this please link me!

Go read Sheldon Browns entire website, and stop playing with your "collector" vinyl toys.
And like everything else. Its the quality not the quantity. From that you should have figured out that its not how many teeth on a cog, but the quality of the material it is made with and how it is made.

PS. your noob question has been taken up, no more for you. :D

More teeth only help with wear. You'll get a little longer use out of a larger tooth cog.

Aside from that its got much more to do with the manufacturing process as the previous poster said. Go searching on the board for folks' recommendations (ie EAI/DA/Phil/Suntour etc).

hardened steel, like the EAI cogs are made of!!

Thanks for the help. Could you possibly send a link or two of good quality cogs for $50 or less? front and rear. I want to see the brand, quality, and materials you guys are talking about.

Phil Wood, SOMA, EAI, Dura Ace. These are the big ones.

While most of us are more than happy to point you in the right direction, we don't want to spoon feed you. Read Sheldon Brown and do some of your own research and footwork.

Well, for a start there is no front cog - the piece that attaches to your cranks is a chainring. A cog is what threads onto your hub.

as others have said, you need to do more research before you even start touching cogs and chainrings. Look at Sheldon Brown's site plz
