Is my bike worth converting?
 

Hello. I have had this mountain bike for about 11 years. It's a Pacific mountain bike. I want to build up a single speed/fixie bike. Im not looking for a track bike with dropped handlebars and a really high seat. I just want a cheap and simple single speed city bike. I was wondering if this bike frame would be worth converting? and how much it might be. I would put smooth tires (but not the super thin ones). I would want to paint the frame too. It seems to have the right dropout. Open to suggestions and opinions thanks.

I dont see why not. If you really dig the frame but not all those pesky gears have at it. Keep in mind though that brand new singe speed and fixed gear bikes can be had for not too much money.

eh, I mean, you could. I just fixed up my neighbors old mountain bike for her. It very well might not ride as well as something you could get for the same money, but its up to you. If you are single speeding it, its a pretty straight forward switch, if you want to fix it not so much.

Cheap mountain bikes are better off without those derailers anyways.
Slap these on and the whole thing's only cost you $14.

I think that single speed makes more sense to me over fixed given its a mtb

Singlespeed and done. Low cost, low headache and perfectly suits the bike.

Worth it.

The conversion will only make it better.

Chances are the bike has a freewheel; if that's the case, the above kit won't work. And it has horizontal dropouts, so no need for a tensioner.
