I used to live in Columbus for a couple years and was involved with a bunch of protest marches & events - I would have LOVED to ride in a Critical Mass there.

CM is a total waste. I HATE riding after those a**clowns have 'made a point'. A lot of PO'd car drivers looking at the rest of the generally safe riders the same as some pointlessly agitating Anarco-Cyclist. Makes my commute a bit more dangerous for a day or two, and for the most part, I never see these same 'riders' out any farther than maybe a couple (2) of miles from home.
For instance, one of the CM organizers here in Denver got her hippy skirt all in a ruffle because I verbally and emphaticlly denounced CM. I rode to the party and this joke on wheels drove. Way to represent...
Thats all I need to know about what CM has become...

I'm an hour away in Athens, GA and we have a CM, but we also have Courteous Mass. Been a while since there was a sort of "introduction" in the local paper but here is something from way back in 2001:

You know what, fine, I get it. I hate getting dicked around by tough-guy drivers who push their literal weight around on the road. I know it feels good to make them eat crow for a change. The problem is, it doesn't solve anything. Drivers act like dicks, we act like dicks back, ad infinitum. Maybe if instead of forcing traffic to bend to our will, we actually behaved as though we are what we are supposed to be striving towards in the first place, that is, a part of traffic itself, we might actually accomplish something.

For what it's worth, we had 50+ bike cops show up unexpectedly for Toronto's last CM. They rode ahead and corked for us, kept motorists in line, and overall made us seem more legitimate. The only downside is a lot fewer joints got smoked. I don't know of any tickets they gave out, and the only time someone told me to stop at a red was when the chick running the show wanted everyone to slow down.

It's only a matter of time before we see a more polite offshoot of CM like courteous mass take hold in most major cities. If you really want to show your city you mean business, behave in a business-like manner. The fact of the matter is, CM is sounding more and more like a "suck it, pricks in cars, we're in charge today"-type affair, as opposed to a "hi, this city is full of cyclists and we need you to help us out" thingamabob.

I think complaining about critical mass is about as effective as critical massers complaining about cops.
We've got to work together to make these things work and hating on the opposing side NEVER works.

"Don't complain about anything ever"

Seriously though, talk is just talk. So instead of whining like some fat b9tch people should just work towards helping things instead of chastise and criticize people. No one is preventing you from starting a letter writing campaign for contacting your senate or congress or whatever you have and use more productive and formal avenues in the effort to pass legislation towards increased enforcement of traffic laws. Anyway I think nobody is perfect on the road and pedestrians and cyclists make mistakes like all drivers do. The important distinction is that cars have a tendency of killing others on the road. CM is here to stay
