question for those that upped their stock gearing from 15t to 17t... did you have a problem w/ the tire hitting the rear brake cross bar thingy?? im planning on installing my 17t today without adding any links to the chain... will i have a problem?

I swapped to 17T but that was after I got a new chain so idk if it was the same length
Just do it, if it doesn't fit, change the length of the chain

I went from the 15T to 16T had had the rear tire rubbing (700x28 Michelin) I actually filed it down a bit as I didn't want to reduce my tire size & my chain is at the perfect snugness. I have about 1mm clearance.

Not sure what the next size up from 28s is but my 28s are a snug fit.

well i have the stock 23s and im upping to a 17t. i was just curious... if it rubs i'll just grind it until it fits and throw some paint over it.

I changed to a 17t freewheel while keeping the stock chain and I fit fine. I'm using 700x23 tires.

It's probably worth it to do that anyways.



PS. I just picked up a new stem for mine...Origin8 from my LBS...lighter, stiffer and better looking than stock. I'll take new pics today I guess.

just threw on the 17t. chain length is fine. less than 5mm clearance between tire and brake crossbar. cant try it out tho bc its raining. stupid miami!

For what it's worth:

I now run an 18t cog (15t stock) and I haven't had any clearance/chain issues.

hopefully mine fits since im putting on 25c tires and possibly a 17t cog. I already took out some links as well.

Maybe frame size plays a part in this also. Mine is a 61, what size are yours?

I'm on a 56cm, and the 17t fit fine with 23s.

@bryyando: you might have some trouble using a 17t if you took out some links

I wasn't expected a snag i just thought it might be a possibility. I won't be able to switch cogs anytime soon though.

go to a local bike shop (not a big wal-mart shop) and get it fixed up...probably needs grease and stuff

Has anyone had one of these delivered to Canada yet? If so, where when and how much was shipping and was customs included in the fee or separate and paid later on? Also, how long did it take?

I've done this on 2 different wheelsets with the aluminum Formula lockring:

Rotafixa method for tightening the cog, then with a (preferrably a lockring tool which I don't have so I used a) vice grip (I know) with the teeth in the grooves for the lockring tool, tighten until it doesn't turn anymore. I'm 250lbs riding with no brakes & since I have done this I have had no problems.

why wouldn't you just do it the CORRECT way?


These things are not just randomly built...they're ****ing engineered to work in a specific way. There's torque specs on half of the parts on a bike even, why wouldn't you just install everything the way that they're meant to be installed and follow the directions set by the engineers who designed this ****?


I mean, instead of tightening my stem down, I just took the bolts off and rubber cemented the stem to the fork steerer tube.
