Tools are expensive. Especially chain whips. At least, when I first looked into them, I distinctly recall a "wow, that's expensive" feeling. Rotafixing works absolutely fine.

Lockring tools, however, are inexpensive and would be a vast improvement over vice grips. Especially for someone riding brakeless, I would think.

I found a Pyramid lockring too and chain whip combo on sale at www.ebikestop.com for $11, not expensive.

Also maybe shorter cranks b/c I feel like shorter might be better (165mm)
If you're going to throw half the parts away, why not just buy a frame and build it with your choice of components from the beginning? I don't get the economics of buying a complete bike in this case.

It wasn't a smart decision on my part. I bought it because I didn't know I would end up enjoying it as much as I do.

The thing that keeps me happy is that I know that when the time comes, I can buy a quality frame and swap over the components I choose to keep and can keep the rest as a wall adornment.

I dont know if this counts but I recently met a guy who was given a road frame (vintage Raleigh) that he wanted to convert. It was pretty bare from what he told me... he bought a Windsor The Hour (almost a year ago, it was yellow) solely to get the parts off of it. He then sold the frame since he didn't have a use for it. It sounds backwards, scrapping a track frame for an old road frame, but he likes the old frame so whatever.

Anybody else get a lot of pain from the stock seat? If so, what did you upgrade to?

Has anybody in here converted their threaded forks with a 1 1/8 threadless fork? I got a headset but it won't fit in the headtube, not even close. Unless there are different sized headsets for different sized headtubes? The inside diameter of the headtube is 30mm. Any advice?

I got mine in Jan - Changed Stuff: Bars to Profile bull horns, specialized B/G seat, tires to Conti Race wire bead - added old 105 Brakes w/TT style levers- old SPD style pedals everything else is stock. Other than chain lube I have performed "0" maintenance - it is my bike of preference unless I have to climb..........Could not be happeier for the price.

There are different sized headsets for different sized head tubes. A 1" headtube takes a 1" headset and a 1 1/8" headset fits in....yep, a 1 1/8" headtube. The BD site states that the threaded stem is 1" and the threadless is 1 1/8".

Advice? Get the one that fits.

151st Street in Harlem. I ride the Riverside bike path from 158th to Battery Park, sometimes I go the opposite direction up to Inwood. Other days I ride in the Bonx.
