Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? eno ecccentric fixed gear newbie

Hi there..i am currently in the process of a rebuild/conversion to fixed gear on an old/free mongoose switchback mountain bike frame. This bike has vertical dropouts so i purchased an eno eccentric hub, which was also already built into the rim with a tubless tire. I have spent the time re-painting this bike and am ready to put it all back together for some riding. I am wanting to make this a freewheel fixie and was wondering if anybody could recommend how much money i should be paying for one and where a good place to buy one would be. I am also curious as to chain length and if i will be able to use the front chainring off the original setup as i dont really have the money to buy a new one. I was also curious if anybody could give some recommendations as to freewheel sizing to match up with the front chainring. Any help would be greatly appreciated as i am pretty new to bike mechanics and most of the stuff i know has been obtained through sheldon browns website and various other sites...thanks!

Jon

Since you already have their hub you should spend the extra bucks and get their freewheel cog for like $70. I'm assuming this is going to be built up as a single speed mountain bike and not a fixed gear, although you you can get a fixed cog and lockring for the flip side as your hub is fixed/free threaded.

Oh yeah i guess single speed is the proper name for it since it will be a freewheel. I went and looked at the eno freewheels on ebay and will probably take your advice and go ahead and pick one up...any suggestions on sizing?

Your gearing, for the most part, would depend on whether you'll be using the bike as a true SS mountain bike off road or using it mainly on the street.

Gearing is personal preference. Most people enjoy the 60-80 gear inch range for road use. Since you didn't tell us how many teeth your chainring is, it's impossible to tell you what cog you should get.

Chain length? They all come with enough links to match 99.9999999999999999% of the chainring/cog combos out there. Basically, buy the chain you want and it'll be long enough.

Also, the ENO freewheels are expensive, but super high quality. A cheaper alternative like the $20 Shimano freewheels will also work perfectly fine.
