Velosteel coaster brake hub group order
Hello,
After contacting the people who have been selling these and seeing that everyone is out I was wondering if anyone would be into doing another group order? If you are wondering what I am talking about you can see Here, here, and here I realize that I am a total newbie here but I've been lurking the forums for a while and I would be willing to be the one to front the money to order the hubs. Hopefully shipping hasn't gone up much since Muttley ordered them so I can try to sell them for the same price. Also same as last time (if they are still willing) we can do a batch with a few different kinds. I just wanted to see if there was any interest here before I went ahead and started contacting velosteel. So anyone interested? |
I would be interested in a 36 hole hub with 117mm width, 171mm axle, 24t snap on cog, 14/24 oval chainstay strap and a set of axle nuts. The velosteel part number should be: 36/2,8-171-117-K
I need the odd sizing for an old American bike with narrow dropouts and a 70t chainring. |
i am interested in two -- actual specs will need to be worked out.
|
I'm interested in 1.
|
I believe that someone actually recently on BF had a Velosteel GB.
Just out of curiosity, why is there such an interest in the States for this cheap hub? |

Just out of curiosity, why is there such an interest in the States for this cheap hub? Word of mouth says the velosteel coaster hub is one of the few quality coaster hubs around. For $30 shipped (price on the last GB), it seems like a pretty sweet deal. |
i am interested. i dont know the specs that i would prefer, but im sure that whatever works for most people would probably work for me too.

ihatesanity: They come with a set of nuts, but I'd suggest getting a pair of track nuts to replace the stockers (I did); make an allowance for the extra thickness of the nuts when determining what axle length you want. The last 1/8" or so on each side of the axle is not threaded. I learned this the hard way.
Muttley PS If you get a group buy going, I will be happy to send the organizer my contact info at Velosteel. He's been really good to work with. |
70 tooth chain ring?!...we need pics :)

jimisnowhere, here's a link to my flickr account - the pictures are in the 'Racycle' set: www.flickr.com/photos/ihatesanity/
muttley, Thanks for the heads-up on the lack of threads on the ends of the spindle. The 171mm spindle is a bit longer than my original, so I think I'll be okay, but I'll double check when I get home in a couple days. Also, thanks for the info on the track nuts, as that would probably be the way to go. As a side note, the spacing of my Racycle's rear dropouts is really ~115mm so i'm hoping I can get the 117mm hub and either take out one of the washers on the drive side or just deal with the tight fit. Does this seem like a bad idea to anyone? Should I get the 110mm hub with a 171mm spindle and add washers to it? Finally, can anyone confirm that the threaded Velosteel hubs accept standard track cogs and lock rings? If so, I will be in for 2 hubs. |
That is awesome. Have you shown this to the C&V guys? They may elect you king for the day.

in for one

Also someone up above said it was $30 shipping last time when it was $40. Just don't want anyone to think i am ripping them off. I'm excited this thread is starting to pick up and I hope this group order happens. I want 4 alone. |
Are there any new updates on the GB?
|
I've spoken with muttley and he gave me the contact information. I emailed them and I am waiting to hear back about costs this time.
The ball is rolling! |
that racycle is insane!

Here are a couple of photos of my Surly Steamroller with a Velosteel. You can see the track nuts in the photos - wider than the stock nuts that ship with the hub.
One shot shows a 165mm axle and the other, a 180 mm axle. Obviously, I should have had the 171mm. Your mileage may vary. Muttley |
joshuagawne: Thanks for the update. I'm pretty stoked at the prospects of getting one of these hubs!
trevor_birba: Thanks, I think it's cool too! The most awesome thing I've noticed about it so far is that it actually has a rebuildable, sealed, "cartridge" bottom bracket. To get the bottom bracket out, you just remove the lug screws from both crank arms and then loosen the two binder bolts on the bottom of the bottom bracket shell and the cartridge slides right out. This also gives you a little room side-to-side to adjust your chainline. I thought that was pretty impressive for 80 year old technology! Muttley: Thanks for posting the pictures of the axles - I definitely see what you mean about making sure the length is suitable. Did you order the 180mm axle later from the guys at Velosteel as a spare part? |
i'll buy one. update the thread or send messages when you get the gb together.
|
ihatesanity: Yes, I wrote an email and they sent me the 180mm axle. When you get your order together, ask about a spare 171mm axle and if they send you one, I'll take it.

I definitely want in on this. What do I need to do?
|
the ball seems to be in velosteel's court. we're just waiting to see what they say.
|
i'm interested in a 36-hole 120mm snap-on hub, with a 16t sprocket. Velosteel spec would be : 36/2.8-180-120-K.
|
If this group buy goes down, I'm in.
|
Just to let everyone know I did hear back from Velosteel. There are a few things to work out then I will let everyone know and start compiling a list of all the specific orders.
Thanks for being patient! |
