Best tires for skids?
 

What are the best tires for the use of skiding as a method to reduce speed in appropriate situations on the street? you define your own criteria ie best feel, longest lasting etc. Thanks!

Skidding is not for stopping.

I was meaning Skidding as a method to reduce speed in appropriate situations.

Tacx Training tire. It even comes in a cool blue. It'll last forever and you'll be skidding like a badass. Ignore the fact that it says crap like "FOR INDOOR USE ONLY", you're a rebel with no brakes.

Cheap ones.

Personally I have never ridden the Soma Everwares, but I had seen or overheard that they have a lot of thickness to the tread area and are suited for longer life. It's a fairly spendy tire but I don't know about the handling characteristics, maybe it rides a bit choppier? due to the extra thickness on the tread. I guess overall a supply of cheap tires may be better.

The only reason I skid to slow down are times when I resist so hard that my rear tire actually locks up...Its more of a byproduct of hard resistance than anything else...


skidding is skidding...doesn't really matter what tires you use


if you want to skid EASIER for doing really stupid long skids...well i donno, piss yourself and it'll trickle down on to the tire

My personal fav is no tire. Take an old 27 inch wheel you don't care about, use enough locktite to make the thing fixed, and skid sans tire. Suddenly you are like Marty McFly in your Delorian - but on a fixed gear! If you find this to your liking, you can upgrade to phil hubs and Deep Vs. The silky smoothness of the phils will let you build up more speed, and the Deep Vs have more "braking surface" because of their high profile.

Oh wait, you want to skid for stopping. That's dumb.

not looking for tires to do trick skids on, just exploring options with regard to tires that may wear well / longer life when I have to lock it up to scrub a bit of speed, say coming down a steep hill.

theoretically speaking you should be able to slow down better if you DON'T lock up


like ABS on a car...


so like...instead of worrying about tire life...just like...don't keep skidding if you find yourself locking up the tire while resisting down a hill.

This Forte tire has a raised middle section with extra thick casing. It skids for days. It's cheap. Your search is over. I once skidded down a full city block in the rain with it.

Thanks for the recommendations, the Forte seems great value at $10 a go and i'll check out the Gatorskins also. I'm gonna stay away from the Everwear at the moment just because they are $45 a go and i've heard more on the other tires.

i would recommend gatorskinds over everwear, just from reading about both. plus the gatorskins look badass, but everwear you can get in all colors which prob why the price so high

vittoria trek tires. iono my lbs recommended them and they aren't half bad so far.
