rear hub sizes and old frames question

i still have some 8 speed campy wheels in my garage . will the 8 speed hub be narrow enough for an old steel frame from 1980. i think they were 7 speed then. i wanna use the 8 speed wheel with spacers and 1 cog for a single speed build.
