shoes, kicks, joints

what type of shoes do you guys ride in (this is not a post about fashion, but if people want to go there so be it)? Recently i have been looking at vintage racing photos and noticing the racers shoes. does anyone know if they were stiff or floppy? I generally ride my fixed with my puma scrills on (i have otrhodics that fit in them well and stiffen up the sole which is nice). here is a photo of them (not my picture or me in the photo) http://farm1.static.flickr.com/38/74954114_c9e280cef7.jpg?v=0
does anyone know of shoes designed for riding that aren't made for clipless pedals (besides the new series that vans is putting out). I wish there was a cool riding shoe that you could wear sock-less and had nice venting for the summer while still being supportive. discuss.

They're stiff. Depending on how far back you're looking they either have a stiff leather sole with a leather "cleat" that fit into the pedal, or have a hard plastic sole like on current clipless shoes and then have a screw on plastic cleat that fits into the pedal. The cleats just had a slot in them that fit over the back edge of the pedal, so when you tightened down the strap it made sure your feet weren't moving anywhere.

You can still find classic slotted cleat shoes around sometimes, but they're not any better to walk in than current clipless road shoes, and much more difficult to get out of the pedal.

Tisza! The soles are hard and they last FOREVER. Has the same pair for 3 years now, and that is rare for me. Communist design FTW!

Pumas serve me well. Nice 'n stiff, great fit, and great grip.

filtersweep 07-10-08 03:08 PM

If you go FAR ENOUGH back, they used carbon fiber soles--- made of wood--- and nailed them to the pedals. Quite stiff indeed.
