new to single speed... need help

hey guys,

i converting my centurion road bike into a single speed bike. im new to this scene and wanting to learn more about cycling and all its terminology.

im a total noob so please bare with me. im looking for a certain type of rear wheel that my LBS showed me. i want to coast just like a road bike, but in single speed, so they told me to get a "free wheel," wheel. the one they showed me has a single cog but with none of those spacers that ive seen on some road bikes. tried looking for this type of wheel on the internet and no luck. plus im looking for one in black. im on a budget so i dont want to spend so much on a rear wheel.

can you guys help me? and links of sites that would carry it? thanks

Joel

You can put a BMX freewheel (that is a screw on freewheel with one gear) onto a wheel with a flip flop hub.

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/singlespeed.html Here is a page of BMX freewheels, scroll down a little.

www.bicyclewheels.com

navigate to "track wheels" and you'll find wheels with flip flop hubs. One side is free, the other is fixed.

bmx wheels come in 700c size?

SheistyMike 07-14-08 09:44 AM

They're not actualy BMX wheels. They make 700c road wheels that have threads for a BMX freewheel on one side or both. If you wanted to keep the rear wheel with a cassette you could get one of those splined cog and spacer kits you were referring to.

thanks for the advice. im planning on using the stock crank set. it's a 52T, how many teeth should i have on my rear cog?

with the bike, i want to go fast but not struggle off the line.

At least 18 for a chainring that big.

What you are looking for is a wheel with a threaded hub. If you go to any bike shop they will have at least one. The next thing is to buy a BMX freewheel. They are relatively inexpensive and they thread onto the threaded hub. Remember, if you are building a wheel, make sure the spacers are offset so the freewheel is in line with the front chainring. Building the wheel from there requires an offset in dishing. Hope this was helpful
