how many people ride these??

i know they're not as good as velocity wheels but they are more in my budget right now...

are they durable/good/awesome for the price/not worth getting/etc????

it depends on what you want out of your wheels.

if you want cheap, deep profile rims with no other function than looking cool, weinmann dp18 are definitely worth the money. colored deep rims sure do look cool on the right bike, and the rims are not going to fall apart in a month, or anything like that.

that said, if you're looking for high quality rims at a good price, you could probably do better elsewhere.

just be aware that you'll be buying one of the heaviest clincher rims around.

They're cheap, strong, and don't look half bad in silver or black.

mine are riding ok.. kind of wish I went with the Mavic cxp22's though. I don't feel too comfortable with the weinmanns due to so many reporting the rims splitting at the seem after a while.

Wheel weight is important because it is rotational mass, so saving weight on the wheels is more important than saving weight on your frame. Saying that if you're riding an old steel bike there is no sense is spending and extortionate amount of money on a set of wheels and if your just riding around generally (no racing etc.) then the dp18's would be fine and will look cool.

I have a beater fix that has some 3 year old Weiny DP-18s on it. Still true, never trued outside of how they came at the shop (good shop, pretensioned et al), have bashed plenty potholes and curbs. Formula hub with DT Swiss 14ga spokes if it matters. Got the set for about $220 in 2005 or so. They aren't very light. City use? Yes. Velodrome use? No.

i used to ride around on one on the rear and it worked great

i have them and have nothing bad to say about them. especially for the price. im not racing my bike, just getting around town hopping up and down curbs. so yeah, they arent bad at all.

I have one on the rear of my conversion, works great for me.

where is this information coming from? i find that hard to believe, especially "so many reporting"

Got a set a few months back when my crappy old re-dished 27" rims wouldn't stay true for more than a few days at a time. They are a bit heavy, but no complaints here [EDIT: Actually, one complaint: I kept getting rear flats for the first few days (yes, I had rim strips), and I think there was some rough, sharp bit somewhere on the rim's interior causing them. A quick buff with some sandpaper did the trick, and I haven't had a flat in months]; I've bashed them around at least 30 miles every day and the rear has only gone slightly out of true once, after meeting a large pothole. Nothing a spoke wrench and 5 minutes couldn't fix. No split seams to report.

my LBS built me Deep-V's to Formulas w/ DT spokes for $285

the dp-18s can be had on ebay for like 175 or soemthing

i got mine from bicyclewheels.com and i'm perfectly happy with them especially at $155 shipped.

I donno, the way I see it is that at 25mph flying down a hill, if my wheel splits, i'll probably get really hurt.


I'd rather go with a wheel that doesn't have history of having issues with that.

I completely agree, i wouldn't want my wheel to split regardless.

I just don't see where the history of issues regarding weinmann dp-18s came from.

they're tough as hell and just as heavy. they look slick as do most deep v's. mine look like **** now due to some DIY machining... but at least i can stop in the rain now.

it seems like whenever the quality of a product is being discussed on here, terrifying issues regarding falling apart and stuff seem to come out of the woodwork, but not really from anyone in particular, which is rather confusing.

I did. And every mention (all three or four of them that turned up after a search of the string "weinmann, seam") of this issue is something along the lines of, "My rims look a little funny, is this bad?" And the responses are all along the lines of, "Well, I knock mine around pretty hard and they're OK." And not one mention of an actual rim failure in the lot of them.

same here, except in the case of sugino cranks. i heard mention of them breaking and chainline issues, but upon searching, most of the chainline issues dont seem to too terrible an there is nothing about them breaking.
