As Many Pedals as There Are Bikes (advice)
Does anybody NOT ride clipless pedals?!? I don't wanna get clipless pedals, just the regular ol pedals with toe clips for my fixed gear, but *heh heh* i don't really know what they look like. Every pedal I see on eBay is clipless, but I don't know if they'll take toe clips too. I can't seem to figure out brand groups/hierarchies to make any sort of decision. Can somebody tell me where to start? The 'pedal' threads here seem to assume that people already want to go clipless.

MKS makes nice pedals for toe clips. I recommend the touring pedal.

Its nice and wide so it is comfortable if you have big feet. It grips well. I run mine with power grips. I don't know of any clipless pedal that also allows toe clips, I'd stick with something from mks.

If you're gonna be riding in soft soled street shoes, I highly recommend MKS GR9s. They're only like 20 bucks(I think, that's what I paid) and they're great pedals for street shoes.

These are great 'cause you can use the other side if you don't feel like clipping in, for cruising/short rides

i got some Forte M1 pedals from performance bike. 15 bucks, and they have removable reflectors, and you can run clips or straps.

PowerGrips FTW.
I needed pedals as well, so I got the high performance pedal kit and I am very happy with them. The pedals are great, and I dig the PowerGrips. The straps themselves would be cheaper if you already have pedals.

the forte m1's look identical to the powergrip pedals, minus the strap. the straps can be had for relatively cheap if i'm not mistaken, making it much less to piece together than buying the kit. the reflectors come off the pedals too. they are super light weight.
on sale for 12.99 at performance now.
look the same right?
plus the straps for 20 bucks. could piece the same thing together for 33 bucks, or 69bucks

I prefer my mountain bike shoes with SPD cleats but if you're going to get straps, don't get cheap ones. If your foot comes off the pedal while riding fixed, particularly at a high rpm, consequences would be "not good".
Check your straps often for wear and tear.

And BBattle: I think I'm gonna go with the toe clips over straps.

toe clips are still going to require straps.
there are a lot of threads about clips, straps, and their associated pedals on this forum. they should come up in search results.

OP -- you're very confused. your three options are as follows:
pedals with clips and straps
pedals with powergrips
clipless pedals
since you want pedals with clips and straps, look at anything made by MKS. MKS makes a whole line of pedals (sylvan, gr-9, etc) which are made to take clips and straps. they also make the industry standard clips (although Soma clips are popular too, and will fit on MKS pedals since the bolt pattern is pretty much universal). As for straps, your choices are leather or nylon. Dimenson makes basic nylon straps for under $10. MKS also makes straps.

that's what I thought, but everyone seemed to be was referring to them seperately, like those PowerGrips are only straps. I guess what I meant was I didn't think I wanted that particular kind.
And I searched the forums already, but a) searching "clip" still comes up with "clipless pedal" threads. b) "toe clip pedals" yielded riding advice as opposed to the brand-specific advice that I need (aka who makes them) and b) since I wasn't familiar with brands in the first place threads with say, "MKS" in the title would mean nothing to me.

go to any online bike parts vendor (jenson, universal, ae bikes, harris, nashbar, etc) and find the pedals category. any of the above will have mks pedals, and a selection of clips and straps that will fit on those mks pedals. and if you cant decide on gr-9, sylvan track, sylvan touring, sylvan touring lite, or sylvan road, then come back here and use the search function. and if you can't decide whether you want soma double/quad gate clips, or regular mks clips, come back here and use the search function. and if you cant decide whether you want leather straps, nylon straps, or double leather straps, or pleather straps, come back here and use the search function.

^^^ That's exactly what I need. Thanks. Pedals and their specs. I need to know what all the sub categories and riding options are. What are they called if they're not "clipless"? "clipped"? "clipfull"? "clippy"?
Something else that helps to know when searching...

didn't mean to lecture about the search thing, just saying that there's a lot of info out there (much more than i have experience with). some search terms you might try are straps, double straps, mks, soma, toshi. at least that'll get you started.
frankly the built in search sucks ass. i use google, just enter the search term followed by site:bikeforums.net. if you want results for clip but not clipless try googling:
clip -clipless site:bikeforums.net
since a lot of the results are videos, probably better to try:
clip -clipless -video site:bikeforums.net

you can also try searching broader terms and using the thread titles to narrow it down. personally i'd have started by searching "pedals" then ctrl+f'd clip.

Nah, no worries. I didn't take it as a "lecture", necessarily. I know it has to suck, though, answering the same questions over and over and over ad infinitum. So, i like to think that my searches are exhaustive and that I do some research before i post a question so I'm not "THAT guy".

i ordered a set of powergrips from nashbar two weeks ago, and they sent an invoice saying "this item is not in stock and we don't know when/if we'll ever get more in". (but charged me for them anyway). are they running out of business or anybody know the deal here?
