Look at this Bike

What's up everyone, after much consideration I decided to get a fixie. I was looking for a fun beater bike I could ride around town. I searched craigslist and saw this ad. Can you guys tell me what you think? Do you think it's worth it?

suicide is suicide to me. id just get a new fixed, you'll spend a little bit more but it maybe more worth it.

for some reason i never trusted suicide setups unless i did it myself.

Redline927 07-21-08 09:36 PM

get it and do some work to it. New wheels without a suicide setup for starters. Building up a bike is half the fun.

solbrothers 07-21-08 09:45 PM

what exactly is suicide? no brakes and a freewheel?

lymbzero 07-21-08 10:24 PM

Suicide is a fixed cog on a freewheel hub with no lock-ring.

Upon braking (skiding or skipping) the fixed cog begins to unwind, and will eventually fall off.

Suicide isn't as suicidal when you have a brake.

It's not a bad deal. But you will spend some money on a new rear wheel if you want a proper fixed gear bicycle.

reedreeder 07-21-08 10:29 PM

really, that's a pretty crappy deal, especially if you have to replace the rear wheel. just find your own frame and convert it yourself, don't pay 300 bucks for a bunch of crap.

xiamsammyx 07-21-08 10:29 PM

i cant believe you guys are saying this isnt a bad deal, its overpriced by about $200

solbrothers 07-21-08 10:39 PM

why would someone ride suicide? its hella tarck?

+1000 (unless **** just costs obscenely more in Hawaii)

matt wisconsin 07-21-08 10:50 PM

I just sold a solid, steel miyata with deep v's for that much. You can do much better.

pacificmonarch 07-22-08 12:43 AM

True, true

Thanks for the replies. I have thought about building my own fixie, but after pricing out everything is just makes more economical sense to buy one built already. I was originally going to buy a road bike with a steel frame and change out the rear wheel, but what's that deal with not selling fixed rear wheels by itself. The only place I found a fixed rear wheel by itself was on Sheldon's site. It was either buy a wheelset for $200 or buy only the rear for $130.

soul05 07-22-08 10:14 AM

or you can get a set of alex rims on bens cycles for 100 bucks with a cog and lockring.
both fixies i currently own cost less than 300 to build each. thats without suicide hubs and pretty decent components. they are also my first 2 fixed gears. building your own bike will help you better understand bikes if this is your first fixie. my coworker who dropped $1300 on a brand new soma frame and components didnt even know how to wrap his handlebars or strap his toe straps.

sneaky viking 07-22-08 10:33 AM

I thought the fork was bent, til I realized it was a fish-eye lens pic!

I don't trust fish eye lens pics.

Also the seat/ seatpost looks jackass. And the way he talks about "suicide cog setup. New freewheel on the side." -that makes no sense. It's either a suicide setup, or it was a freewheel. So the whole build is probably pretty jackass.

SheistyMike 07-22-08 10:39 AM

Light and nimble...lol. I have that same frame in my shed from an abandoned ss project. Sans wheels and shifters/derailers it is still heavier than my dawes sst(which isnt a light bike).

because to experienced cyslists, empiricism trumps theory esposed by alarmist noobs.

brakeless is far more suicidal than lockringless, IMO.

fetch 07-22-08 02:55 PM

yeah hawaii's conversions are always expensive. i always just reason with people to build a proper bike up the first time around.

Judge_Posner 07-22-08 03:43 PM

around here, old schwinn worlds sell anywhere from $30 (yard-sale steal) to $150 (craigslist). i'd say $100 is a fair price. the guy who converted that schwinn probably put a couple hours labor in (respace, redish, chop n flop), which should be worth $20 or $30, and a couple parts-bin parts (seat, tape, maybe new pedals, etc). i'd say a fair price for the bike would be $150, max. $300 is absurd.

fetch 07-22-08 07:25 PM

thing is old road bikes around here, unless bought from a co-op are usually 100 bucks if you're lucky. crappy to live in hawaii.

solly81 07-22-08 09:48 PM

OP, does the bike even fit you? That's the first order of business IMO. It sure doesn't look like it fit whoever is selling it.

I hear you, its the same way in Puerto Rico, everything has to be bought in from the states, which makes it cost twice as much! Ive sent frames to freinds and they will gladly pay for shipping as long as the frame is a decent price, no "I found this awesome frame/bike in the dump/trash" going on there! If you have a good bicycle its taken care of and gets handed down to the next person in line!

kyselad 07-23-08 09:02 AM

Even if the original setup had cost $100, $300 is a joke. Buy a different $100 bike and add a $200 wheelset with an actual fixed hub, and you're already ahead of this heap. Or do a suicide hub and redish for next-to-nothing. Regardless, I agree with numerous others above that this is way overpriced.

jlakser49 07-23-08 01:10 PM

i have a schwinn world converted to a fixed gear.
i got the bike free on craigslist in ny. the bike is finished now and total coast is under 300 or just around.
this bike is deff not worth it. i could have built this set up for under 50 bucks.
a scwinn world also isent the lightest frame but it works. i wouldn't even sell my set up for that much.

supercub 07-23-08 03:24 PM

I've seen some nice '80s Miyatas and Bridgestones going for $100-150 on craigslist. Good frames. Look for something like that and convert it yourself. Or save up a bit more and get a new bike. McCully Bike has the Giant Bowery for around $500, I think.

nateintokyo 07-23-08 06:34 PM

looks like a rip off/
