pros/cons of setting up a 650c fixed?
I have a road bike that I really like but I recently upgraded to a carbon and much newer bike and I was contemplating of setting up to be fixed. So what do you guys think?
Btw the bike is a Nishiki NFS-B |
As long as you have a high enough bottom bracket. I am actuall thinking of building a 650B wheelset for riding my track bike on the road. I don't know what cranks you are using, but I prefer the bottom bracket to be at least 270mm high for my 165mm cranks. I don't corner very aggressively though.

650c is a dead standard. Expect tires to get more expensive as time goes on.
That being said, I have 3 650 wheels on two bikes. I will let you figure the rest out. And no, not for barspins, but because the bike was made for it. |
i used to own a 650c fixed. just sold it tonight
I loved it. never did a bar spin ever it had a really high bottom bracket thats important but i did still pedal strike sometimes. I was limited by the gear ratio I could run because I couldn't fit a bigger chain ring near my chain stay, and they didnt make a smaller cog. wheels had to be custom made. but i did love my rear mavic open pro and it was fairly cheap. BUT TIRES WERE NOT cheap!!! and tires were hard to find, and it was best to buy inter tubes in bulk when i did find them the only reason I sold that bike was I got tired of dealing with the wheels and tires after a year http://stupidhurts.org/gallery/album...e/IMG_0124.jpg |
cOurt, I like the proportion that the 650s gave your bike. It looks good, for reason! What frame is that, and is it a track or road frame, or somewhere in between?
|
it is an old triathlon frame.

Not to jack this thread, but I didn't want to start a new one and get flamed for "not searching." C0urt, or others, is there a place that you would recommend getting 650c wheels? I've looked a lot online and on ebay and haven't been able to find any that aren't set up for road bikes, or front wheel only. I'm building a conversion for my g/f and am considering going this way, but if its too expensive or too incredibly hard to track them down I may have to reconsider...I don't care much about what kind, although she might want color options...at least a choice between black and chrome...Thanks for any info you can give.
