1980s Kashimax Aero...

Looking through my garage, I found the 1980s era Kashimax Aero saddle upon which I raced BMX in the 80s. I was quite amused to find an NJS stamp on the underside of the saddle, but I digress. Anyway, I'm contemplating putting it on my bike but I don't remember if it was comfortable or not. It's nylon without padding, so I know I won't be riding any centuries on it.

Anyone here use an older Kashimax Aero saddle? How's it ride after all these years?

It's more like this one...

...because that's actually it. I suppose a picture in the first place would have been nice.

Is your crotch made out of iron? Because that thing is for decoration only.

It might not be an uber comfortable saddle, but I remember riding it all over hell and creation back in the day.

So...

...maybe my crotch isn't made of iron, but maybe it is all calloused from the years riding on that saddle.

If you use it on longer rides and wear shorts/bibs with quality chamois the hardness of your saddle should never be a problem.

Hahahaha! I figured that would be someone's answer. Sorry folks, I took the plunge and it's on my bike. I rode it a few miles; it's much harder than I remember but not as bad as I expected. I'm sure I'll be ditching the Dickies in favor of some padded MTB shorts when I ride any distance now.

But most importantly? It matches the color scheme of the bike!

Just kidding.

Well, padding doesn't necessarily make a saddle more comfortable, and maybe the nylon flexes in the right places, so if that saddle happens to be the right shape for your particular ass/taint structure, then it might be ok.

But it probably isn't. There's really only one way to find out, though.

I think saddle comfort has everything to do with saddle side and top profiles/contours with relation to an individual's butt shape and little to do with a material's density/hardness. If we went by this logic 1sqft cruiser seats with 5" of plush would be the "most comfortable."

I still think it's funny that the only NJS part on my entire bicycle is a BMX saddle from the 80s.

I ride unpadded kashimax aero saddles on a couple of my bikes. They get kind of gruesome after 30 miles of sustained riding or so, but I love them for on-and-off riding around town. They handle inclement weather like a champ and are pretty comfortable for a skinny ******* like myself.

iamtim, I presume you're riding the padded version? I used the padded version for 2 years on the road. Not a great saddle, but not bad either.

No... the one you pointed me to didn't say "Aero" underneath "Kashimax".

I have an even older plastic saddle -- a Cinelli Unicanitor track saddle that is original to my '71 Paramount. It is surprisingly comfortable, but I haven't ridden it for more than 5 miles at a time.
