The thing you first choose is your crankset. Choose wisely, the crankset and your current chainline on your rear wheel will dictate the BB specs.
BB wise there are
1) type of interface (square, octalink, external etc)
2) length
3) type of shell it is supposed to fit (english, italian etc.)
1 is controlled by your cranks
2 is controlled by your cranks and chainline
3 is controlled by your bike
You need to tell us what BB you have on your bike now and your chainline in the rear if you want to re-use it. Keep in mind new shimano square taper cart BBs (JIS) are about $25.

all i know about my crank is that it says "custom" on the crank arm, and it has a square interface.I got it off of an old GIANT bike. Not even sure of the model of the GIANT...
