Talk me out of painting my HED3
Not saying I'm going to do it. But I'm so tempted to paint my trispoke.
Has anyone here painted one? Or anything that's carbon/epoxy for that matter. I'm more concerned with removing the paint (if I ever get sick of it) than actually applying it. Obviously I don't want to damage the wheel. I know Jasco is some crazy stuff, but that's all I can think of.
Help a brother out.

jasco is going to kill carbon fibre. doing anything beyond sanding the clearcoat to a dull finish at a high grit is super sketchy.
resale value is going to plummet too. even though the CF fad is on its way out anyway.

If you bring the wheel up to W. Sac, my first graders will happily paint it. And joy that I get from watching will be unmeasurable.

I painted a spinergy. not the spokes, just the rim. i used 1200 grit sandpaper to dull the clear and got a body shop to paint it. it turned out very good. go for it.

yeah sanding it is going to probably dull it and would take forever. CF isn't to forgiving like fiberglass...we worked on it at my last shop.

Vinyl is a terrible idea.
I can't guarantee that it's heavier, but it won't be smooth, therefore definitely hindering the aerodynamic capability of the wheel. Not to mention I'm sure it'll look like crap. There are way too many seams to make it look good.

I mean, I'm not saying that if I got an HED3, it'd be for track use only.
But I'd hate to see someone buying a product like that and then not using it properly.
That's like people buying aero TT clip on bars and then using them as a luggage rack on their city bike

Let's do wheelies with a fragile, carbon front wheel.

FWIW I have covered a (very abused, not-easily-replaceable) bass guitar pickup with black sticky vinyl (AKA contact paper). With a low-heat heat gun or a high-heat hair dryer you can create tight contours without creases. Of course with a HED3 you would need some seams and it would not look pretty.

Why don't you sit down, take a breather, and maybe dust off your kid robot and kubricks that you've left collecting dust since you discovered how cool fixiez are.
