Sugino BB?
 

Hey, does anyone know what/any other cranks that can work with the BB for the Sugino RD Messengers? 103 JIS Square Taper? Thanks.

Ok, how about what BB can work with the Sugino RD's? Can't move the chainring to the inside of the spider cause it'll strike the chainstays. I'm not invested enough in the combo to try and make them work together, just want to replace one or the other instead of both if I can. Anyone?

Bulletproof cranks will work w/t Sugino bb. They've got a 110mm bolt circle, though. I've got the combo on my SS Fuji conversion. W/a Rocket Ring. If you want to use the Sugino cranks you can use the outer part of the spider by using 2 3/8" 'star' washers per chainring bolt combo(assuming you're using chainring bolts from a double set) on the backside of the chainring. I've got THIS setup on my SS, also. The 'star' washers are available at any hardware store for cheap.

Would think any bb would work w/t cranks provided it's square taper and the spindle is long enough. Stronglight makes one that's 107mm...that might give you enough clearance to run on the inside of the spider.

I'll take you up on your suggestions. With all the bad stuff I've found out about this crankset since I've bought it, I really don't want to take many more chances with my wallet. 45 mm chainline! Why would Sugino do that? I wold CL this thing, but I'd feel like a dip selling it to someone without mentioning this issue, & would probably be better off throwing it away if i did. Man, I wish you could cuss on this forum. :notamused:

use a smaller chainring.

I had emailed yellowjersey.com, since they still show the older RD5000 on their website and apparently it works great. They told me:

"New version is called "RD2". Sugino changed over late in 2007"

and in follow-up regarding the chainline issue:

"Hasn't been a problem.
I think the change was in honesty and accuracy more than an actual chainline change."

I already knew about the change and had seeen the 45mm listed on Sugino's website. Regardless of what YJ said in the email, people here always indicate that the chainline in fact did change in real-life use, and the RD2 doesn't work as well. I wound up buying slightly used S75's.

Also - though YJ has the RD5000 on their site, apparently they don't have it in stock. They just haven't updated their website in a while.

I thought about that, but I like the gearing I'm at now. I guess if push comes to shove, that might be an option.

duplicate it with a smaller cog also.
