Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Annoying hipsters you know in real life...

This one time, I was at a party with a friend of mine named Katie. We'd known each other for some time and were thinking about dating. Things were going great until she introduced me to her friend from class. I guess he'd been helping her with her studies. I wanted to thank him and talk to him -- he seemed decent enough by reputation.

Anyway, she'd warned me that the guy was a little hip but she thought I might like him because he is "into bikes". But jesus christ he was one of the most messed up people I have ever met. He never shutup about frigging bikes.

He went on and on about skids and bikes and how he was just the most awesome cyclist ever. It was embarrassing and a lot of people around us were uncomfortable. When he started talking about fork rakes, I thought I was in a nightmare, it really was that bad.

Also, he smelled terrible, like a butt that had a butt. He clearly thought he was being funny and friendly but he succeeded only in alienating the people around him------if you didn't ride a bike, you were an idiot, basically.

Everybody talked about him behind his back when he wasn't around, only to shut up the moment he came over and force a smile through gritted teeth as he continued to laugh at his own jokes and scratch the few ill-considered hairs springing from just below his chin.

I swear, I have never, ever, met anyone so repulsive and hateful in my life.

He's even an attention whoor on Facebook. I friended him just to grab his profile and look at the stupid things he posts all the time.

What an ass.

Actually, come to think of it, I don't recall whether or not he was even at the school there. He was one of those weird guys that just came to campus and showed up when parties were ending and laughed too loud like a horse that just got Zippy the Pinhead for the first time. He loved just creepily watching girls from the corner though.

I mean, really. If you ever run across this kid on your campus, run, don't walk, in the opposite direction as quick as you can, find an ancient cold war era bomb shelter, and live off the foodstuffs until one of you matriculates more or less by accident.

Anyone else got stories of loathsome hipsters?

So he got the girl and you were left stiff and hurt?

I don't go to parties/bars. I don't know any hipsters, really, except one girl who wrote "I prefer decent, catchy hardcore and other indie music" as her Facebook "music" description. Ugh.

Philadelphia and my school are full of them. I just don't associate with them or look their way.

edit: It's cool you got into talking about bike nerd stuff (fork rake) but it seems he was talking out of his ass.

Just curious, why would you put a carbon fork on a converted road frame?

Jet - I don't know who you are, but you snagged my Facebook profile pic for this thread. I've only been on there a few months. I only use it to keep up with a few friends for our movie night, and a couple of long-time friends around the country, so I definitely know you haven't "friended" me. I recently started riding a bike again but it hasn't really been a point of conversation. If you were to meet me at a party I'd be much more likely to be with a small group talking about home brewing, music, or repairing plaster walls in 100 year old houses. It's also been almost ten years since I finshed grad school, in a town several hours away. I do know a couple of Katies, but nobody I've helped study. One is married and teaches school and the other is a former neighbor who just moved across country with her long-time boyfriend.

Sorry to disappoint you, the person you speak of sounds like a rat, but it's not me. I smell some Facebook profile trolling here.

people think she's really annoying to the point of dis-liking me for a 64x64 image, apparently. so I put in place hayley williams, one of the other women I would love to know.

Hey Andrew, I see my pic there. Not yours. I just sent Jet a PM involving this. Now I'm rather confused. BTW, I can't skid, don't stink, don't know **** about forks.

Ha HA yeah I can't skid either - only been on a fixed gear for a few weeks. I have a conversion but it's SS. I was sorta wondering if there was some coding involved with this but I figured I should say something before the thread grew ginormous.

Maybe this is a sign for me to stop surfing the web and get back to these boring MySQL tutorials I'm supposed to be doing for work tomorrow.

Oh I get it, nice leet haxoring skillz. I don't have a Facebook profile (privacy concerns!) so I was left wildly out of it. I still don't get any image or related Facebook material. Well played.

Sorry to spoil your fun, but last I recall my school is in San Francisco, not Toronto as both your fixedgeargallery and velospace say you are located.

How did you even find me on Facebook? Hater AND creeper.
