3/32 vs 1/8
 
I've been riding fixed for a little over a year, and I've always heard that it's best to have a 1/8 chain on a 3/32 chain ring, and a 1/8 cog.
Some have said all three should be 1/8, but I'm skeptical because it would simply be way to tight and rigid.
Now, I have a couple people telling me that the whole setup should be 3/32 because it's more flexible, and that whether 1/8 or 3/32 there really isn't enough pressure on the chain to actually make it snap in half like a nightmare.

What do you think? What's your setup?

its true that 3/32 is more forgiving (or flexible) of an off chainline. the most quiet bike i ever had was a miyata conversion with full 3/32 drive. but like everyone else, i eventually wanted true track 1/8 stuff (thinking i wanted the strongest possible, etc.) and i got rid of the cheaper 3/32. now I am thinking about converting my racing bike to all 3/32 for lightness and quiet. 1/8 is noisy. 3/32 is just as strong.

I used to always run all 1/8". Currently I am running a 3/32" chainring, 1/8" cog and chain. Really can't tell the difference from either.

not again.

just use all the same size, otherwise it doesn't matter except in availability of particular parts.

I'm not saying I know anything but I have a bike with all 1/8 Dura-Ace and another with 3/32 Dura-Ace cranks and chainring and 3/32 Phil cog/lockring and I'm pretty sure they all qualify as "true track" stuff. Just saying, I believe that although most track racers, keirin etc.. use 1/8, 3/32 is also acceptably track worthy. Not sure whether or not NJS requires 1/8 but all the NJS certified comanies sell them.. My 2 cents.

Not to dig up posts, but I took off my SRAM 8 speed chain for winter and threw on KMC Z 1/8 chain and an old 42t chain ring from an old miyata and it is THE smoothest, quietest riding bike I have ever been on. I don't see why people keep saying 1/8 is so loud.. I could see with a poor chain line (mines at 42, so I don't know) but I really love the 1/8 (on 3/32 ring/cog).

There really isn't a huge difference between the two. 1/32 is lighter and has lateral flex so will make slightly off chainlines sound quieter. 1/8 are track specific and don't have the lateral flex like the 1/32 chain. Personal preference really, i run 1/8 drivetrain and it is pin quiet. NINJA BIKE! except it's white haha

Totally agree about the noise. I've ridden plenty of 1/8" fixed gears and most of them were quiet. I think it comes down to the crank and cog, too. Question, though. I'm running all 3/32" for the first time and am paranoid of putting too much stress on the gear. Should I switch to 1/8" and buy a new crank and cog? Or am I just being paranoid?

Why would you buy a whole new crank if all you want to do is change the chain ring? Many bikes put a mediocre stock 3/32" chain ring on fixed gear bikes because it's cheaper, while it probably won't have any catastrophic failure I'd swap it out. But don't be paranoid about riding the bike until you switch it, I mean road bikes all use 3/32" rings most and of them last a while.

you are being paranoid. 1/8" chain is not stronger than 3/32" chain. How would a narrow chain put more "stress" on the gear than a wider chain?

You are worring about nothing. ride the bike.
