Hey guys ive been really interested in doing a conversion on one of the older bikes we have lying around.. and i wanted to ask you guys which you think would be the best candidate..

my dads old huffy 15 speed :D says "the wind" on the top loads of sedimental value there..

my grandfathers schwinn world sport. he bought it a few years ago so it has no value to me except money :D

or some butt ugly one that i still have to dig out of the back.. lol

ill be getting more info on each bike as i get them out of the mess they are in.. oh and i wanted to convert them to fixed gear :D cuz it looks like so much fun :D

i converted a schwinn world bike with my friend (it was his) and it came out really nice
has some nice color coordinations goin on :D

ok so i was leaning towards the schwinn also.. its a full functional 12/15 speed w/e it is.. so what would i need to convert it to fixed gear.. i figure if i do the bare minimum and end up liking it then i can add on or get a new bike.. but if i absolutely hate it i wont be out too much :P i was talking to the guy at the lbs and he said cog? (idk if im using it right here.. its the rear gear thing) and 2 lengths of chain should do it.. is this all i need or is there stuff missing

Well,when you find out what the other crappy bike is let us know......you migh be sitting on a treasure and not know it. Regardless of what you choose,make sure you have fun with it.This forum is filled with a lot of people that wont be constructive at all.There are a lot of people on here that will be happy to give advice though.Take it all in stride.

ok so i went out and dug the bikes out of their garbage pit.. and found that the schwinn is a 4130..

the crappy bike is a single speed made in germany. it has spor12000(could also be sport2000 idk) on the front. on the chain guard it has "sport de luxe" or something like that.. and there are weird designs all over the bike.

i also found that the schwinn has poo poo tires and will be needing new ones.

since you have a single speed bike, that would be the cheapest option...all you need is to throw a fixed gear cog on it and then roll.

the single speed i have now would need alot of work for me to ride it.. its butt ugly not to mention rusted in a bunch of places including the frame...

so i think im gonna go with the schwinn... from what i read im gonna need a cog, chain, lock ring, and spacers to make the chain run straight..

is this correct? am i missing anything

you mentioned in the original post that your grandfather purchased the schwinn recently, you may want to check if it has vertical dropouts, not sure if schwinn is still making these.

Read the sheldon brown article. print it out. read it again. Maybe a third time.

if you are going fixed you may want (need) a whole new rear wheel.
