Do Dura ace cogs need a special chain?.

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Do Dura ace cogs need a special chain?.

I bought a 3/32" 15 t Dura Ace track cog and put it on the fixie and it doesn't fit. Seems like the chain pitch is wrong. I tried 3 different chains and no dice. The cog spacing seems a tiny bit too wide, the first few teeth fit, but then the chain jumps up on the cog and resets itself. Does the Dura ace ss-7600 need a special chain?

Thanks

I see. My tape measure seems to agree with you...it appears that someone put the wrong cog in the box.

Thanks

ha I bought a dura ace 18th cog and it is stamped as 18 on the back but it actually just has 17. I sat for a good 15 minutes and counted over and over and all I could get was 17 teeth. Weird huh?

Dura Ace doesnt make 17t or 18t cogs.
16t is the biggest they make.

Gosh I swear I can't count. Its because I'm an art major. The box says 18 on it. The cog is 16 but on the back there is an 18 stamped into the metal. It is the strangest thing. Thatís why I am a little befuddled. They shouldn't even have an 18 stamp and the box shouldn't have said 18 tooth on it.

Are you sure it doesn't say 1/8 with maybe a slash that is hard to see?

Okay okay okay just got back from the lbs. It’s a 16 on the back but a terrible one. The top of the six is just down too far thus making the 6 look like an 8. It took a magnifying glass to really tell. Also they messed up on the box by labeling it as an 18 tooth. Just a stupid mix up. Got my refund because there is a difference between a 16t and an 18t.

it's not exactly a trade secret dura ace doesn't make larger than 16t cogs

maybe try a different bike shop if they don't know more than you

Sorry to hijack your thread but I have a question, how do you know if you need a 1/8" cog or a 3/32"?

Yeah. I just needed an 18th tooth cog and it was hanging up and said 18 tooth on it so I grabbed it paid and walked out the door. How in the world was I supposed to know DA does not make past a 16. I do now of course but at the time no idea. They just stuck the wrong stickers on the box. Easy mistake to make.

Got the right one today, the shop had labeled the box incorrectly...I should have charged them for the hour that I wasted. Amyway, took the fixie out on it's first ride today...FUN!
