How do you tell if the pedals are good or not?

There isn't really a rule for determining this. Name brand pedals (eg. Shimano) should be higher quality than no-name pedals.

Looks good bro. Got any better pics of the bars?

homEsick 09-25-08 07:30 PM

eh its the only fixed i have, and as the first one, i dont have anything better to compare it to, so its just fine with me. i tend to make fun at my own expense, but im the only fixed rider withing a 120 mile radius, and im not too deeply offended but intrawebz personell.

the tires need an instant upgrade, thats for sure, but its fairly dependable if you arent used to high caliber parts and what not.
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...7/IMG01504.jpg

i posted it in the ja/poser thread for obvious reasons, but at least im not in denial ;D

as its been a bit since the op, this perhaps isnt too on topic anymore, but if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask

random tidbits after reading through the thread

~im 6'3" 32 inch inseam and my bike is a 58
~i wrecked it when a pedal broke off as i was sprinting and got cheapo bulletproof cranks, and havent been able to get chainline perfect again, but am a bit too lazy to fix that
~i did indeed rotate my seatpost 180 to get in a couple cm closer to the front
~28 seems the largest tires you can clear
~you can't swap in a 19t cog without a new chain (well you can, as i have done, but it's so tight it skips teeth when you brake/accelerate hard.. i really need to fix this)
~i replaced the back tire when it blew out hitting a large bump on a sidewalk in the rain. i feel a lot more confident with a new rear tire
~i want to stick the 16t stock cog on the other side but cant, for the life of me, getting the effing freewheel off that i screwed on the opposite side when i first got it

I'm not going to hate on your bike, but I will hate on the crappy picture! it looks like there are more modifications to that bike than just what you listed. I want to see more pics of what you've done (preferably taken with something other than a cellphone)

If you are using the stock hub I don't think you can (safely) put a fixed cog on the "freewheel" side. I'm not an expret but I believe you need the smaller, reversed threads to run a lock ring and the freewheel side does not have these threads. You can run a Surly 'Dingle' double cog if you want multiple gearings w/o a double fixed hub. http://www.universalcycles.com/image...mall/14982.jpg

homEsick 09-26-08 12:02 PM

no worries :)

ya i didnt actually have any intention showing the pictures online when i took them on the lowest quality setting, but ill take more tonite since someone is interested.

other than what i listen, i replaced drops with bullhorns, ourygrips ><, new pedals/clips/straps. the other upgrades are aesthetic. ill probably take the brake off when i get another link for my chain. the only reasons ive used it is when i have to stop quickly and am too scared to skid because of the chain being too tight. other than that, its 100% flat and i never really have to ride in traffic.

oh really? i guess i have seen fixed/free or fixed/fixed hubs, but it didnt cross my mind which mine was until you just mentioned it.

but yeah, ill put up better quality pictures tonite, and thank you.

There may be other ways of putting a fixed cog on the freewheel side of a hub, I just dont know what they are? (welding?)

RastamanD 09-26-08 03:07 PM

just read this whole thread and joined....i want this bike.

im 6'2" and i think im going with the 58cm orange because it secksy :) the reason i want this bike is because im tired of skating everywhere, Longboards are fun to commute on but aren't as efficient as a bike. oh and i think i need another hobby...most of my money goes to Longboards or videogames. i figure if i add a third one in the loop it will balance out. a perfect trinity of hobbies...lol

anyways i would appreciate some tips or links that will help me out. thanks alot

Understanding 09-26-08 03:13 PM

my perfect trinity are guitars, designs, and bikes

i really like the blue but the decals really don't do anything for me, and i'm afraid to leave it with no clear coat on it.

i'd like to repaint this or powdercoat it some time. but it rides well so i'll just push this into the back of my mind until it really needs it.

i'm 6'2 also and i got the 58cm, it fits perfect. i also got it in orange, you won't regret it, the pictures on bd really don't do it justice.

Understanding 09-26-08 03:57 PM

you'll want to get 49 cm then.

charcoal 09-26-08 11:51 PM

I just got one of these the other day and I have to say that I've been having a lot of fun with it. Im not an experienced rider by any means, but like rastamanD I was tired of longboarding everywhere (SILVERFISH SHOUT OUT!) Im 6' and ordered the 56... it seems to fit pretty well although I think I would be more comfortable with a shorter reach. What size stem comes with a 56 anybody know? I think I want to get a new seat too because the stock one doesnt seem to work well with my buttocks. Any suggestions on a cheap replacement seat? OH yeah and this is my first post YAY!:thumb:

Get one, you'll love it. The saddle and pedals are pretty crap-tastic so you may want to budget for replacements for both but otherwise, it's a nice little bike.

Welcome to the mad house and congrats on the new bike. Any saddle with a wider rear should be more supportive of your "sit bones" and therefore more comfortable. If you aren't a weight weenie, a cheapo replacement from Wal-Mart would probably work fine.

Understanding 09-28-08 02:12 PM

i feel like an idiot,

handlebars are 25.4, it says so on the stem....

daybreak 09-28-08 04:12 PM

my bars say 26

charcoal 09-28-08 04:55 PM

So anybody know what size stem comes on the 56? Is it a 110?

Understanding 09-28-08 04:57 PM

hmm, well, now we know where to find the measurements.

about the stem, you can ask them, or you can wait to find out. i think mine (52cm) is like, 100mm

charcoal 09-28-08 06:07 PM

Update... I took a look at the stem under some light in the basement and saw 110 on the side of it. So the 56 come with a 110mm stem just to clear everything up. :crash:

solbrothers 09-28-08 06:49 PM

woot! not to sound ilke a hipster, but i learned the leg over bar skid today :P

Understanding 09-28-08 07:00 PM

i still can't skid,
i've done it once and threw my chain.

RastamanD 09-28-08 11:10 PM

ya silverfish FTW

anyways i ended up getting an old schwinn sprint for $12. got new tubes tires and tape...its not bad needs a little tune up but its great. i still want a moto messenger though...but that will come later :)

Sounds like you don't [or didn't] have your chain tensioned correctly.

Understanding 09-29-08 01:01 PM

you know, i don't know what proper chain tension is.

i think i have a better idea now, i set my chain much looser then i have (i don't remember how i set my chain then), and it runs better and smoother, but no matter what, when i get up to speed i hear clicking from chain and even when i slow it down.

jpdesjar 09-29-08 01:05 PM

are you running a 1/8 chain on 3/32 parts? that combo tends to be a little noisy, just make sure your chain is lubed properly and it should quiet things down

i learned to skid on loose dirt and grass, it's fun
