hollow axles?
 

hi,

I bend the axle of my rear suzue basic hub after only 4 weeks :(
now I was thinking that a hollow axle might last longer. who makes
hollow threaded axles ?
I found some here :

but it says "for quick release". would they still work with regular nuts?
oh ..and will I get the hub of the axle without breaking it?

Hollow axles will work with regular nuts, as long as you get the right length. But why? I'd imagine the axle in a Suzue Basic is not a very high quality one; I suggest you go find a heat treated axle, like those made by Standard and Kink (strong enough for BMXs, plenty strong for a fixie).

Why would you believe hollow to be stronger than solid?

phil wood's axles are hollow, as are dura ace axles. although, phil's axles are gigantic and the hole in the D/A hubs aren't large enough to put a QR through...

the problem with BMX axles is that it's getting harder and harder to find 3/8" BMX axles nowadays. most companies have switched over to larger, heavier, stronger 14mm axles...i'm not sure if standard or kink still make 3/8" axles...

i know dans competition had some really nice heat treated 3/8" axles back in the day, but the middles of them were oversized (the front was almost twice as big in the center as the ends were).

how, praytell, did you manage to bend an axle on your track bike?

Wheels manufacturing carries just about every pitch, length, and diameter axle you could think of. You can get one at most shops for $12 or so.

that would be a bit of an overkill in such a cheap hub. but I might consider them
when I get a new wheel.

I was just riding along :rolleyes: but on the "roads" of london. sometimes
when a truck or bus is heading my way with 50mph I panic and go up a curb.

it should be noted that phil wood "axles" are twice the size of normal axles. and what actually ends up going through the dropout is a 3/8" allen bolt for the front and a smaller one for the rear with a washer/spacer-type thing.

Standards and Kinks are both 3/8ths. Standards come in 24tpi and 26tpi, not sure if they'd fit though.

Youneed 26tpi for the Suzue Basic rear hub.

get some Ti axles like i got.

I'll buy them from you for two nickles.
