Seriously though, while I have nothing as mentioned against people who don't ride brakes, I think it's fair to single you out as being worth a heaping dose of derision. The fact that every time this topic comes up you have to reference a "brakeless camaraderie" with **** like "that's a dude I could ride with" and "there are a few of us who know what you mean" crap one seriously has to wonder how much of your decision to ride without brakes is part of trying to claim ownership to a certain group of riders you perceive as being cool. You try way too hard dude, quit posing and just ride your bike already.

I ride with an eyepatch on because the lack of depth perception puts me in a zen-like state of awareness and concentration about my riding and surroundings.
**** ya.

Riding brakeless is fun.
Having knees long term is
better. But yeah, brakeless is fun--
a good challenge. Still. . .

riding with out brakes is cool. It makes the bikes look cool it makes you more aware, but to me riding without a brake, or a helmet, is the same as trusting drivers and I am not prepared to do that.

I get the brakeless ethos, really, I do. My own personal reasons for my brake are 1) I like pricey tires, go figure. I don't mind sacrificing lifespan for road feel but I'd have a heart attack if someone tried skidding my vitt corsa's! 2) I find I am faster with a brake and able to take more chances on wet/poor traction roads or downhill in the rain - I could also just be a wuss. 3) I'm still haunted by the day a toddler ran out in front of me in battery park and I slammed on the front brake just in time NOT to run her over. I definitely don't have faith in my reaction time in freak situations like that to beat a finger-to-lever synapse firing with my legs, and I couldn't imagine having to explain my lack of brakes to the kid's mother.

What do they call those dudes riding a brakeless fixed gear who are always talking about irony

I was doing one of my usual 15-20mi rides around the city today when guys on geared bikes were doing flybys, like "look how fast I can go". Problem is, they slammed the brakes at every intersection while I coasted thru without breaking stride, timing the cross traffic & never stopping until I reached my destination. That's what riding brakeless is all about. Guess what, none of them made any better time than me.
So for all of you, "but can you go fast without brake?" people out there, going fast only means you're more likely to wrap your bike.
Continue.

seriously, if you can ride a fixed gear, you can ride as fast as you want. enough with the slow riding, need a brake preaching.
And if my chain brakes I'll ted shred it and put a new link on, thnx.

that's what riding a beach cruiser is all about
that argument has nothing to do with anything
If they're decked out in roadie gear they're probably practicing sprint intervals. That statement is just as ignorant as the people who get psyched about mashing past a roadie and thinking that they 'beat' them in some way. Chances are, they're on a much longer ride and watching their hrm closely to get the most out of the workout.
