Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? UTSA/San Antonio

Hey guys,
I recently got my brother into riding bikes, specifically fixed gear.
He will be attending college for the first time at UTSA in San Antonio soon.

Unfortunately from what I hear San Antonio has little to no bike scene.
And coming from Austin thats a bit overwhelming!

So if you live in the San Antonio area or attend UTSA, contact me so I can hook you up with my brother!
He's looking for other fixed gear kids like himself to ride with and/or start rides up on campus.

Thanks for the help!!!
-Chris

I lived there back in 94-99'. It's a little rough going being car free around there, especially fixie. People are pretty friendly there, but I only rode my bike to-and from class when I lived at Chase Hill apts. It was great riding mtb around there, and I skipped a lot of class just riding around Crown Ridge, but a lot of that's been developed. Good luck to him. There's some good riding along 1604 if he wants to eat up miles.

I don't see many fixies in San Antonio, though he's bound to find a few on campus. I've seen a couple on 1604, though they were guys leading their gf or wives on training rides. I've heard that there's a small fixie crowd at the Blue Star Brewery Bike Shop. Ask the mechanic - I'm pretty sure his name is Jimmy. He rides a fixie to work. It's near downtown though, far from UTSA.

Lived in S.A. for a year when I was a youngin' and loved it there (aside from the brutal world of a 6th grade transfer student into a new middle school). My dad attended classes at UTSA while I lived there. I don't really have anything pertinent to add regarding fixed gear riding there, just wanted to show some TX love. I miss EZs Pizza and amazing Mexican breakfasts from so many hole-in-the-wall burrito shops! Sigh.. I'll be back in TX one day.
