New singlespeed roadster
 

Im going to be the proud daddy of my very own singlespeed road bike in the next few weeks. But, my new rig is lacking a crankset. I need a cheap solution to this little problem. Im not sure exactly what i should look for or even what kind i should look for. Help me out please.

The 165 Sora double converted to a single for fixed gear use off Sheldon Brown's site is a good, cheap crankset that is used by many.

I can say that these are a happy set of cranks. Bought mine from Sheldon and have had a great time with them over the 2 months that I have owned them.

It's possible to find stuff sitting around a local shop that the shop folks would love to get rid of. If you've got a relationship with them, ask if they have a set of cheap-o 130mm cranks that are the length you're looking for. That's how I got the rim for my wheel, and it didn't cost a dime.

here it is. It should be exactly like this except different crankset. The guy who is delivering it friday threw in two or three(no joke!) spare cranksets he had laying around!

If you need to find a home for ANY of those cranksets for any reason let me know, I have two projects that desperately need them, the uglier the better.

hey, familymanor anyone else in need:

i have some old sugino cranks, aluminum, 170mm with a 130mm spider. no chainring. i'm not using 'em. if anyone wants to pay shipping, let me know. they're in decent, but ugly, condition.

Well, i got the bike!! Now i have a question, how important is chain alignment? I need a way to move the front chainring in towards the frame about 3/4 of an inch, or just not worry about it.

3/4" is a lot. If it isn't done so, mount your chainring on the inside of the crank spider arm. I noticed from the photo, your chainring is large. Hopefully, it'll clear the chainstay by moving it inward. If there's no clearance, swap the ring with say, a 42. 42's are commonly used in these conversions.

I got it worked out, when i wrote the post, i forgot that i hadn't tightened the crankset down all the way. And, it only needed to go about 1/4 inch. it isn't perfect, but its close enough to where it isn't a big deal.

:D, getting it close but not all the way perfect would bother me like trying to remember something right on the tip of my brain. It's always lurking there. Then you'll go looking for a shorter spindled bottom bracket. ;) I ended up with three extra bottom brackets that way!

I have an extra bottom bracket for it, i think it will make it perfect, at least damn close. I just need to buy a tool to do the swap...speaking of which, where can i get one for cheap?

You should be able to get a BB tool anywhere that sells Park Tools.

I actually pieced together what kind of BB it is too, so i know exactly what tool i need. Sweet. This weekend im going to get everything i need, put it together monday, and be riding before i know it. I CAN'T WAIT!!
