what is the best rattle can paint for a fixie?
I have an older steel race frame i am making into a ss/fixie. I dont really wanna spend the money on powdercoating it yet, it has been stripped already. What rattle can paints have you guys found to be tough and dry well. I build guitars as a hobby and Iprefer lacquer it is hard as hell but a bit to fragile i would assume on a bike. any pointers, i just want a nice white paint job.

I heard Search makes a good paint.

Is your frame raw metal? Do you know you need more than just 'paint'? Do you know what UV rays do to un-clearcoated basecoat? Raw metal requires mechanical + chemical adheasion just so you know (scuffing AND self-etching primer). But I'm going to guess you'll probably use spray paint you bought at wal-mart...in that case just keep respraying it when it fails.

there's a great thread or 2 on here somewhere that are rife with information on this topic. just search and everything you need is there:thumb:

just make sure you don't use geared bike paint.
|
tremclad...it's self priming and sticks to almost anything...as long as it only has one gear

I use Duplicolor Auto paint. It works fairly well and you have lots of options for colors, like color shifting paint, candies and metal flakes. If all you want is a solid white frame i would recomend any appliance enamel since it *should* be a sturdier finish.

I painted an old MTB a couple years ago. I used rustoleum. It worked really well and doesn't (hasn't yet) chip or get scratched up. The only drawback - it took literally over a week to fully dry. I'd use it again.

I used Krylon with pretty good results.
It's all in the preparation though... |
make sure you add primer and clearcoat to that list.
also, patience. |

Good paint here but it's $25 a can.

duplicolor rim enamel will be the most resistant to scratches and chipping. it only comes in white, black and gunmetal. there is a rim enamel clearcoat as well.
this langster comp has been painted with said paint. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k7...xe/frame02.gif |

I tried that once. Turns out it was not only geared bike paint, but not suitable for track geometry ;) p.s. Duplicolor + prep work. |
I'm working on a rattle can project myself... My autoparts stores didn't have the color I wanted (green), so I ended up using Rustoleum Enamel from Home Depot. I have a couple more coats to go, but it looks pretty good, and seems sturdy enough. When I'm done, I think I'll see about taking it to an autobody shop to get it clearcoated on the cheap...

you guys are really killing his geared bike paint joke.
