i cant believe it happened to me (and my fixie)
i busted my chain doing a skip hop approaching a red light. i was using a SRAM pc48 i think...its the one harris-cyclery sells cheap.
ive had the drivetrain for a while, do you all recommend that i replace the whole thing (ring, cog, chain), or will i be able to get by just replacing the chain?
i dont have the money for a whole drivetrain right now, i guess ill be commuting on my SS motobecane for a while..

I use PC-48 on almost all of my fixies. I also use a Park chain stretch checker to tell me when to replace the chain. You can also use the measurement of the chain pin method that Sheldon uses. If the cog/chainwheel is not worn then the chain alone will be fine. If the whole system is worn then you will just ruin the new chain when you put it on. Depending on your riding style you might expect to get 2-3000 miles from a pc-48. That is my experience. If you keep replacing the chains before they become too worn then you should not need to replace the chainwheels/cogs very often. Maybe every 5 years or so; maybe longer. That's my experience anyway. I Never had to replace a chainring due to premature wear.

I'd just replace the chain. If the chain just breaks I think that's the chain's fault, but if it skips off without breaking (like mine did a while ago) that's a drive-train problem. How long have you had the chain?

its got the chain when i converted it to fixed gear. that was a little more than 2 years ago...i commute on it to and from school, i dont know how many miles i put on it though....
