If you ride in the center lane, the chances of getting nabbed off your bike are slim. That being said, if a cop does trail you, there are ways to lose them. But, in the end, it's not worth it. So if you see cops at the street corner. Just stop at the light.
FWIW, I take Grand st all the way East now. Avoids the cluster**** on Delancey and you get to play frogger with all the people in Chinatown.

yeah i zig zag through the lower east side when i can and cut over on suffolk. Delancey can be a nightmare with heavy traffic and its just not worth it if it can be avoided.

i just got a $150 ticket for running a red light.
there will apparently be an ongoing bicycle trap of sorts on delancey approaching the williamsburg bridge, so heads up to obey all traffic laws in that area to avoid getting a ticket.
the officer was actually really nice about the whole thing. he was apologetic saying he'd rather be doing other stuff than ticketing cyclists, but he was posted there by his boss "as a flavor of the month" because someone recently got hit by a bus. he also said if i went to court to fight the ticket it would probably be thrown out because odds are he won't make it to court. he said he'd be posted there for a while ticketing cyclists, so be careful in that particular area or maybe take an alternate route..
off topic, but a really hot girl got pulled over right after me and we made small talk while the officers were "running our info" or whatever. so maybe if you're lonely and single it will be a good way to meet girls! jk, of course

Thanks for the heads up.
Here in Alabama, they announce where they will be setting up sobriety checkpoints. It's required by law. Amazingly,(or maybe not) they still manage to catch quite a few drunks.
