nyc police "bike trap" on delancey

i just got a $150 ticket for running a red light.

there will apparently be an ongoing bicycle trap of sorts on delancey approaching the williamsburg bridge, so heads up to obey all traffic laws in that area to avoid getting a ticket.

the officer was actually really nice about the whole thing. he was apologetic saying he'd rather be doing other stuff than ticketing cyclists, but he was posted there by his boss "as a flavor of the month" because someone recently got hit by a bus. he also said if i went to court to fight the ticket it would probably be thrown out because odds are he won't make it to court. he said he'd be posted there for a while ticketing cyclists, so be careful in that particular area or maybe take an alternate route..

off topic, but a really hot girl got pulled over right after me and we made small talk while the officers were "running our info" or whatever. so maybe if you're lonely and single it will be a good way to meet girls! jk, of course

I don't really know NYC streets at all, but bikesnob just blogged about something similar.

Hey,

I got a double traffic violation in upstate NY. To make things worse, I was on a state road. Gave me total of 200USD (I think). And that was UPSTATE NEW YORK, middle of farms and 3AM and no car or bipedal species of any kind within few miles.

I ought to have ran away but hey you can't beat an automobile over some miles with no signals. ... And, he wasn't nice at all.

That 200USD was real painful, you know? I nearly missed my rent.

i KNEW something was going on...

the other day i was riding to the bridge to hang out with friends and a cop sounded his siren after i ran a red light. i just pretended i didn't hear anything and kept riding on the inside shoulder of delancey until the cops, a couple car lengths back, started yelling "yeah you on the bike, pull over now!". when they drove up near me, i had to basically ride up the island at the base of the bridge and abruptly cut across the oncoming traffic onto clinton to evade them. i zig zagged around for a couple minutes and flew west on houston; no worries. - i'm sure they got a kick out of the theatrics since they were probably aware of how dumb it was to stop a working messenger for running a light.

folks posted signs on the Williamsburg yesterday afternoon to warn people coming in from Brooklyn about the trap. it was much appreciated!!!

what's not appreciated is the ridiculous little flame war that broke out on Craigslist's bike section afterwards.

in any case, i have to be extra careful about getting busted for running a red, since i already got ticketed once for that during the May critical mass. if i get busted again, i think it will cost me $400 because it's a second offense.

it sounds incredibly irresponsible to say, but i cannot imagine having to wait for every green when i ride. that would be horrendous.

so hanging out with friends is part of your job description? sorry guys but i have no sympathy. some jobs have liabilities. if you're expected to break laws in order to get the job done competitively, that's the risk you take in doing business... that ticket, whether it's 150 or 340, should be something you factor into your pay.

i'm not saying your pay shouldn't be higher, it should- but don't act all righteous and proud of what you do when it's hypocritical and dangerous. there's no reason your client can't wait another five minutes for you to stop at reds. they may appreciate it when you don't but it's in your power to put them back in their place. they're paying for a service, you need to take it upon yourself to not take that as some greater charge. you pay to play so either take your tickets like a man or stop acting like a criminal.

running from cops isn't cool unless they're KKK members or obviously crooked. you have no proof these cops were either.

i speak from experience when i say: dude, seriously. it's not that bad.

maybe we can treat this bike trap as an experiment... see what it's like to stop at reds, and make a real effort to enjoy your time at standstill. if that means bringing a printout of your favorite work of art, whip it out and enjoy it for the light cycle. if that means dancing, ****ing dance. whatever you like to do, do that at the red and see just how terrible it is. then weigh that against paying 140 dollars and putting people's wellbeing into danger and stepping all over people's right of way.

at the end of the work day, a lot of messengers hang out at the base of the bridge. sorry i didn't elaborate...

why would you assume that, by the way?

let's see... if i average 25-30 runs in an 8 hour day while cutting every light possible, how many fewer COMMISSION-BASED jobs do you think i would do if i were to stop at every light? you think it's not a big deal for a client to wait an extra 5 minutes for a single job; are you kidding me? that would cancel out over 2 hours of potential money making from the average messengers day. take a second to think next time and realize you're talking a lot about something you know little about.

new york mantle is right. you have to hustle. if u stand around looking at art, some other hungry ***** will take ur runs and then u can't make rent. that's the way it is. i'm sure being a messenger isn't something u want to do or even thought about, but for many, this is it, not simply bc they choose to do it, but simply b/c there is nothing else out there. i've seen messengers out here who have been doing this for 15 plus years. they are the hardest hustler's out there.

oh look one of the moronic new yorkers is caught in a blatant lie and the nyc goon squad(the barely literate portion too) has to jump in with some obnoxious nonsensical bull**** in half assed support.

bhaha, dutret. why are u so angry. its not good for ur blood pressure. english isn't my first language if that helps. i'd love to sit here and argue with you b/c i love you, but i fear if we argue we'll never be bff's. don't take ur hate for johnprolly and visitordesign on me. when you work on ur bike for a living come back and then talk to me. don't you work in an office somewhere and so you really have no idea what you are talking about. but i still love your chubby ass, sitting in an office, playing scrabulous.

yeah because just mentioning that you're a "working messenger" means that you cannot stoop to riding like us mere civilians at any time lest you lose that hustlin edge. Actually I group you with crissfyah and the worst of the ny scum at least prolly and vd seem to have some semblance of intelligence even if they endorse lifestyles I don't respect. Yall remind of the neanderthalic skinheads I knew in highschool.

hahaah, damn, really, crissfyah. he is my boy so i am not offended.
now its not that i said u have to run every red light. of course not. that would just be crazy. i was just saying that the mere idea of stopping at every red light was going to be impossible. bikers would never get anywhere. i don't agree with a lot of these new young messengers that go screaming down the streets cursing people out the way. but i also have to be realistic, as should you that, stopping at every light would just hurt food delivery and messengers.
i never said i was a working messenger. i work in an office.

It is true that you don't -have- to run red lights, all you need is a mind and the ability to use it coupled with a dispatcher that has the same thing, and legs that let you stop and start all day, not that you need to as much as all that, real pros time the lights.

I have never understood the claims that some riders need to run lights to get there on time, even worse, the ones who say stopping wastes too much of their energy. Who would admit to being such a kitten pawed wuss so proudly?
